🚒🚑 First Responders Day 🚑🚒

Today, we simply want to say thank you.

Thank you to the firefighters, paramedics, police officers, emergency service volunteers, rescue personnel, and all first responders who step forward when others need help the most.

While many people are running from danger, you are running towards it. You answer calls at all hours, face difficult situations, and provide comfort, care, and hope during some of the toughest moments in people's lives.

At AMAST Safety & Rescue, we are fortunate to work with many incredible first responders. They are not only members of our team but also members of our communities. People who quietly dedicate themselves to serving others, often without recognition.

To our trainers, emergency response personnel, and all of our staff who continue to serve as firefighters, paramedics, and emergency responders: we are proud of you and grateful for everything you do.

Today, we honour your commitment, your compassion, and your willingness to put others before yourselves.

From all of us at AMAST Safety & Rescue, thank you to every first responder and your families, who also make sacrifices in support of the work you do.

Your communities are safer because of you ❤️

🏃‍♀️ We’re Taking on the Mackay Marina Run! 🏃‍♂️

The team at AMAST Safety & Rescue is proud to be participating in this year’s Mackay Marina Run, and we’re doing it for something bigger than ourselves 💛
We’re raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation — an incredible organisation that supports Australians and their families facing blood cancer every single day. From providing accommodation and emotional support, to funding vital research, their work truly changes lives.

As a team that’s all about safety, support, and helping others, this cause really resonates with us. We’re coming together, lacing up our runners, and putting in the effort to make a meaningful impact in our community.

✨ How you can help:
• Make a donation (every dollar counts!)
• Share this post to spread the word
• Cheer us on as we take on the run
No donation is too small, and every bit of support helps bring hope to those who need it most.

🔥 Fun Fact Friday 🔥

Why are Dalmatians known as the “firehouse dogs”? 🚒🐾

Back in the old days of horse-drawn fire carriages, Dalmatians were the ultimate crew members. They naturally got along with horses and were trained to run alongside the carriages—helping calm the horses, clear the path, and guard the equipment while firefighters handled emergencies.

Their loyalty, energy, and protective instincts made them perfect partners on the job. Over time, they became a proud symbol of fire services around the world.

So next time you see a Dalmatian, remember—they’ve got a long history of running toward the action, not away from it. 🔥🐶

Is it knot right or not right?

The photo shows three different Figure of 8 on the bight knots. While the route of the rope through each of the knots is correct, the finishing of the knot varies between all three. The knot on the left is how I was taught to tie the knot many years ago and is still my go-to. I still use a barrel knot to finish it off, make it nice and neat, and just have that little redundancy, and if anyone clips a carabiner into the space between the 8 and the barrel (a common reason why some people say it shouldn’t be there), they shouldn’t be allowed near rope.
The knot in the centre is how I was taught when I did rope access training, as opposed to the way I learnt with rescue. The tail does not contain a barrel knot and is left around 150mm long. I don’t have an issue with this either, so long as the knot is tied and packed correctly, and if this is completed then the knot shouldn’t slip.
One thing for certain though, while the knots on the left are acceptable, my students know that if they present me with the garbage on the right, they will be retying it 😉😂.
Now I’ll wait for them to zoom in and try and pick the faults. I’m running my own little sweep on who will be first 😜

Carabiner or Karabiner

Why do you sometimes see Carabiner sometimes spelt with a ‘K’?

There is no actual difference in the equipment, both spelling is referring to the same thing. It comes down to origin and language. The spelling with a K originally come from the German word “Karabinerhaken”, meaning “carbine hook” (a hook used by soldiers to attach gear or rifles). The ‘C’ spelling is the French-influenced English version. When the word was adopted into English, the spelling shifted to match more common English/French patterns.

So, while you will see the different spelling in different areas or brands, they mean the same thing, and as Aussies there are way too many syllables in ‘carabiner’, so we’ll just stick with ‘crabs’.

If you’re after some ‘crabs’ or any other height or rescue gear, give us a call and we’ll help you out. Keep an eye out for our new online store coming soon.

Fun fact Friday

Halligan or Hooligan?

There is commonly some debate in fire and rescue crews on the correct terminology of one of the most useful pieces of equipment on an appliance. Both names are correct. The traditional Halligan forcible entry tool was invented by Hugh Halligan of the FDNY in 1948, hence the name Halligan. Later versions came along and Paratech adopted the name Hooligan in the late 1960’s. There are some differences between a true Halligan tool and the later versions from other manufacturers. The true Halligan is a forged single piece design, while the Hooligan tool is often a three-piece design. The traditional forged Halligan tool has a “fork” or “claw” on one end and an adze and pick on the other. The later variants are available with either the claw or a “can opener” end as well as the adze and pick on the other.

So, is it Halligan or Hooligan? That would depend on whether you’re a traditionalist or which manufacturer you purchased it from. I personally call it a Hooligan tool as the unit I use is a Paratech brand, and that’s what they named theirs. One thing that you can guarantee though, it is normally the biggest hooligan in the team that goes straight for it 🤣
