BIG changes to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) have been proposed in the 2026 Federal Budget, and they could reshape the way Australians invest.

Under the proposed reforms, the current 50% CGT discount would be replaced from 1 July 2027 with a new inflation-indexed model and a 30% minimum tax on gains.

For property investors, share investors, crypto holders, and trust structures, these changes could have significant long-term implications - particularly around investment strategy, asset structures, and future exit planning.

The good news? Existing assets are expected to receive transitional protection, and the family home exemption remains unchanged. Small business CGT concessions are also expected to stay in place.

As with any major reform, outcomes will depend heavily on your personal circumstances and long-term goals.

If you’d like to discuss how these proposed changes could affect your financial position or investment strategy, contact FMS Group on 1300 982 499 to speak to our financial advisors today.

With interest rates and personal circumstances constantly changing, the home loan that suited you a few years ago might not be the best fit today.

Refinancing could help you secure a better rate, reduce your repayments, access equity, or simply structure your loan in a way that works better for your current lifestyle.

If it’s been a while since you reviewed your mortgage, now could be the perfect time for a check-in. Even small changes can make a big difference over time.

Not sure where to start? Our team can review your current loan and help you explore your options with confidence.
