Forever I save you
Forever looking through the sphere of past childhoods,
trying to remember it without the memories of growing up too fast blinding the momentary bliss I can still clasp in my hands
And hold tight.
When we leave our childhood behind
We don't learn to live without our innocence,
We learn to compromise
Our naivety
For understanding and sharper perceptions.
I don't learn to live without me
And forget the blissful mirrage
Of love being permanent
Because one day
We still hope it will be.
We remember those moments and our heart still wishes it will be like that one day,
And
Instead
We learn to live with love
In a different way
Expecting nothing
So dissapointment never catches us unsuspectingly,
Realising our own expectations are what hurts us more,
More than what people fail to fullfill.
And so
We
manage
Becoming thicker skinned blocking away the fear of being abandoned and left,
Untill we feel nothing.
Our softness diminishes over time
Unless we consciously nourish
The seeds for our own growth
And still choose to show love.
And if all the people we leave behind
Need to see us again
They only have to close their eyes or look up into the night skies
and remember the remote laughter
Or into the dark shadows
I loved to dance with
Dodging the sun's warmth for the mysterious secrets hidden in the dark
Shadows lurking in between.
I'm still that quite one there
Away from the crowd
Watching from a distance
Observing each move
Waiting for my time,
As I skipped along the corner of the shadows
Daring to jump into the dark abysses that others avoided.
I'm still there
Within the broken dreams and shattered glass
Picking it up piece by piece
And mending my own soul
Because our hopes and naivety is replaced
With the realisation the biggest asset in life
Is our own responsibility
for our life
outside of our reliance in other people.
Forever I save you,
protect you and keep you safe in my arms,
my child inside,
smelling the flowers and still believing everything is
Forever.

The mirrors we look in
Sometimes we see things in others, that we don't see in ourselves.

Portrait of my Italian looking brother with his olive skin, dark wavy hair, green tinged eyes (which you don't see here!), chiselled jaw and prominent chin.
I have often wondered, how do we recognise a person amongst the crowd?
Is it by the features alone that define them, or is it their individual flare and what you know catches their spark once you know them well enough that distinguishes who they are.
Is it the look in their eyes, the silent ways they speak?
As if people's whole personality metamorphoses inside of themselves and you know them well enough to know how they are like in different settings, alone together, or in the crowd.
The ways they try to adjust and feel a part of something more than themselves.
The things that make us feel different are not so different after all, cause we all have traits that make us feel that way, but that different makes us feel less alone when we connect.
And when we see them amongst others there is a part of us we recognise in them, that longing for belonging.
We are the same in different kinds of ways.

Okay, not known what to say for new year for a while.
Been trying to think of something everyone can relate to for 2023.
And it kind of hit me while doing plein air in seaport. I drew a quick sketch of a boat there. The proportions and measurements were inaccurate, the geometry incorrect, and I had to squish the boat in and shorten it to fit it into the page.
To summarise the experience, it was a failure and it was not as perfect as I hoped it to be.
I then I got back home to work on my Bargue drawings, which works on your accuracy.
This style doesn’t have room for carless mistakes, you have to get everything to perfection as best you can.
With this experience I thought, we all have times when it feels like we will never be good enough.
I will never work up to perfection, no matter how much I try to because there is always something else to improve once we have reached that milestone. After finishing these off, I still see areas that are not perfect, I see flaws and mistakes and I worry that another knowledgeable artist who knows their stuff will see the mistakes that maybe others may not pick up on. I feel like a beginner still, inadequate and lesser than.
We all have times of perfectionism, where we always try to be better and maybe get so engrossed that we become workaholics, some maybe more than others!
The reality is, I will never be good enough, nor you, because I am always learning. Being open to improvement and staying humble is part of life.
So as we go into this year, try practicing to embrace your flaws and see mistakes as a stepladder to learn from.
We may have times where we feel lazy, tired, burnt out, or the opposite where we are so engrossed and overworked that the everyday practical side of living around us is forgotten as we work on and into the night. Whatever it is, take a short amount of time to highlight your strengths and qualities, and find areas where you can work at. Accept the flaws and be gentle with yourself, especially gentle, understanding that you are a human trying your best.

Skate Punk Chick
This is something I have done in an art journal recently.
And thought, you know, of maybe sharing this piece because of the meaning I found and the thought processes while creating it.
I was inspired by Susannah Curtis's piece named "Sacrifice". The intention behind her piece was to shine a light on the plight of children who had experienced domestic violence and the silencing they endure.
The concept I took from it was that this issue is so concealed and hidden away, and her depiction of a beautiful child's soul as a light to such a confronting subject is a stark contrast to the darkness they may have endured. It represents one who yearns to belong and be seen, "The fox draped around the child reflects his personality and experience. Strikingly handsome it represents one who Iives in the shadows within society, yet yearns to be involved, included and welcomed.
Foxes interact with humans & urban environments- they live on the fringes, watching from shadow yet also reliant on adult humans and with a desire to stay within their comfort zone while safely contemplating the wider world from a familiar point of view.
The child in my painting appears vulnerable & sacrificial in pose, yet the domestic familiarity of a background of crumpled bed sheets anchors the subject within family life." -Susannah Curtis
When you here the name I have given this piece, Skate Punk Chick, you are probably picturing a dirty little street wanderer, possibly with little moral compass and not taught in being a normal person contributing to the world.
Our minds automatically come to assumptions or judgements that may not actually be accurate or understanding of a child's potential to rise above circumstances.
Instead when you hear the name of this piece, imagine a lost soul who has finally found a home inside, as it rests under the trees leaning against a street wall. Lost in some ways, but at rest, because they are on their way home to a better life.
It is not a being who is stuck, scrambling in their dark past or way of life they had before, but somone shining a torch for others to follow from behind, bringing peace for those who are also stumbling in the dark.

"Lord of Dance"
I have always loved the beauty and majestic power of horses, their soft gentle eyes, their free spiritedness, and rippling muscles. To me it symbolises the beauty in gentleness, strength, and courage.
