Tara Royle Artist Statement:
In Ms Redroo, I’ve reimagined the iconic Ms Redhead matchbox figure as a cheeky, quintessentially Australian red kangaroo. This bold new version keeps her fiery spirit alive - now with a native twist. Sitting in the classic relaxed kangaroo stance, arms propped up, as if leaning toward you, she’s mid-yarn, winking knowingly with that unmistakable Aussie larrikin charm. The red kangaroo, a national symbol, replaces the traditional flame-haired figure, celebrating both strength and playfulness. Hand drawn using digital illustration, I wanted to blend pop culture nostalgia with native wildlife and humour, reinterpreting a familiar icon through a distinctly Australian lens. Ms Redroo isn’t just a mascot - she’s a character full of sass, spirit, and sunburnt country pride. She invites viewers to reflect on identity, humour, and how national symbols evolve while still sparking recognition and warmth.

yes, that is indeed my kitty on my shoulder - watching my every brush stroke to canvas. I love her so much. 💖

always get nervous starting a new canvas piece - but really love the simple composition of this one.
