Mr Rascal
The music of Christian Duell and his “loose roster of blow-ins”

Thanks to Gold Coast Music Network for featuring CLEAN BREAK and for this great review:
"AN EP THAT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING
Mr Rascal has released their brand-new EP Clean Break, a four-track project that captures the band’s sharp sound and evolving style. Christian Duell, the creative force between Mr Rascal, has used Clean Break to explore themes of change, resilience, and moving forward. Each track adds a different layer to the record – it’s soft, indie-folk that’s gentle and speaks to the heart. It’s been 16-years since we’ve had an album from Mr Racal. The EP highlights not only their growth as musicians but also their focus on creating music that connects. “The entire EP embodies transformation and the gift of finishing what once felt lost,” said frontman Christian Duell. So excited for this!
We began our solo careers trading new songs in my Indooroopilly treehouse in May 2006, played our first show together at Verve Brisbane a few months later and she was first to play at the sold out QPAC show in 2008.
Like all my other musician friends who stuck at it while I hibernated, she’s gone onto bigger and better things with an amazing solo album and magic with half/cut and Hachiku.
and I will be playing acoustic guitars again at my favourite record store .vinyl
Free and all ages!
Hi everyone, I'm delighted to introduce my new EP CLEAN BREAK!
I'd love to hear what you think. When I played this to my daughter Esther she said “Daddy is this you? I don’t like it, can you please turn it off?” So if you do have any constructive feedback please use your manners like Esther 😂

For anyone working on a creative project that feels like it’s taking forever, this is for you! These songs were written between 2010–2014 during a time of public success but private loneliness. Shelved as experiments that didn’t fit what I thought was “expected” of Mr Rascal. Over a decade later, with the support of George Carpenter, they’ve been brought to life as they were always meant to sound – rich, layered, and full of fire!
1. EMPIRE OF CHILDREN: Early 2010s reflection on social media’s dark side, an empire of followers but no real intimacy. Prophetic in 2025 as it now feels even darker.
2. OOH PALINDROME: A raw reckoning with a role model’s betrayal and a choice to live extremes of joy and despair rather than indifference.
3. THE FIRST DESIRE: Written in 2012, inspired by fleeting street connections and a surreal Tate Modern encounter where intimacy turned out to be an art performance. A meditation on longing and fragile sparks of connection.
4. THIS PLACE AHEAD OF US: Written in 2014 in Reykjavík during a long-distance relationship with my now-wife. A time capsule of uncertainty that has a different angle after 11 years together.
This is my CLEAN BREAK from years of grief and over a decade of creative self-doubt—an invitation to make peace with the past and see every day as a second chance. If you started something special long ago and you’re still alive…finish it. It feels great!
Much love, XO Mr R
