Help Simplify the POPE Event Application Process – Have Your Say Fill in Survey
https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx...
I’m reaching out to you as someone who’s passionate about improving the events and festivals sector in Victoria. I'm proud to be supporting the Australian Festival Association (AFA) as they lead the case for simplifying the POPE (Places of Public Entertainment) scheme as part of the Department of Transport and Planning's (DTP) review.
The POPE scheme is a regulatory requirement under the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2018, and while event safety is crucial, the current application process is often complex, inconsistent, and costly for organisers. This review is an important opportunity to:
• Reduce ambiguity in requirements
• Simplify and standardise permit processes
• Improve consistency in regulatory oversight
To ensure the review reflects the needs of the events sector, the AFA is encouraging all stakeholders to participate in the POPE Review Survey. Your insights will help shape the review process and guide improvements that reduce red tape while maintaining essential safety standards.
We are particularly seeking input from the following stakeholder groups:
• Organisers of events and festivals
• Suppliers/contractors for events and festivals
• Council events and festivals teams
• Council regulators
• State regulators
• Non-government regulators
• Other industry stakeholders
If you’d like to contribute, please complete the POPE Review Survey by 19 March 2025: This form has been created by Department of Transport and Planning's (DTP) and they will review the survey results.
The DTP is also inviting interested stakeholders to participate in workshops throughout April and May to discuss key priorities. The survey includes a section to express your interest in joining these workshops.
I strongly encourage you to get involved and share this email with colleagues or contacts who may also want to contribute. Together, we can simplify the application process and better support Victoria’s thriving events and festival industry.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.

I’m thrilled to announce that Tom Valcanis and I have just finished a project that’s been close to our hearts. Back in 2022, I suggested to Tom—our lead author and a good friend—that he should write a book about dating. Despite his initial doubts—being the balding, overweight hermit with a permanent scowl—Tom, this is what we had in common accept I was quit social and had a plesent smile, he had a wealth of experience and insights from years of therapy, experimentation, and countless lessons learned from ‘no’. another thing we had in common so so so many no's.
Turns out, he was really good at it! Our mens support group members which we started in 2011 started reaching out to him for advice, and that’s when we decided to turn Tom’s expertise into something more tangible. Please his a great writer, my whole website was write by hime www.ten.training.

The IRONMAN Group is the world’s largest mass participation sports event facilitator, reaching over 600,00 participants globally, across 235 events each year. IRONMAN Oceania oversees the portfolio of events here in Australia and in NZ, hosting an array of elite and semi-professional events, such as the 70.3 IRONMAN series: as well as several community events including the City 2 Surf fun run.
IRONMAN Geelong 70.3 is one of the most exciting triathlon events on the calendar. The event relies on a village of wonderful volunteers to span the length of the course and assist our 1500+ athletes in reaching their greatest athletic milestone yet.
The event itself entails a 1.9km swim, 90km bike leg, followed by a 21.1km run home to the finish line, and hence there is a wide array of roles requiring volunteers.
Individual roles include Course Marshals, Swim start and finish, Athlete Services Assistants, Finish Line Assistants, Check in Assistants, Lead Bikes and Aid stations, just to name a few!
All roles, dependent on location have varying time commitments, with the largest being approx. 7.5hrs. All volunteers will receive a volunteer pack to ensure they are looked after throughout the day. IRONMANs are a unique atmosphere unlike other sporting events, and we would love to have you along with us for the journey of Geelong 70.3
Location: steam Packet Gardens, Geelong.
