Today, 17 June is National Police Legacy Day when we recognise the vital work of Police Legacy organisations across Australia.

These not-for-profit groups provide unwavering emotional, financial, and practical support to the families of police officers, after the loss of a loved one. Each state and territory has its own Police Legacy organisation, and together, they form a powerful national network of care and compassion.

The Police Legacy Daisy is inspired by the Michaelmas Daisy. It is the flower of St Michael, the patron saint of police who protects those who have sworn to serve.

On National Police Legacy Day, we share the story of Georgina Askew.

Georgina’s husband, AFP Sergeant David Askew, passed away suddenly from a heart attack in 2019.

The couple met through policing in Tasmania before relocating to Brisbane when David joined the AFP. They later moved to Canberra and then onto the Solomon Islands, where David led the Police Response Team.

After his sudden death, AFP Legacy quickly stepped in, providing immediate financial and ongoing support to his wife Georgina and their children.

“You hear a lot of people say it’s the club you never want to join, but when you do, you’re incredibly grateful,” Georgina said.

Today we proudly celebrate the annual National Police Legacy Day 🌸

This annual occasion honours the vital work of Police Legacy organisations across Australia and recognises the ongoing support they provide to police families. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the purpose of Legacy: standing beside our colleagues’ families when they need it most.

AFP Legacy provides support services, financial assistance, and ongoing care to the families of AFP employees who pass away, whether on or off duty.

Over the past year, we have supported 58 family groups and 145 legatees, helping to build connection, foster community, and provide meaningful support for those navigating life after loss.

This National Police Legacy Day, we encourage everyone to wear the Police Legacy Daisy. The daisy is inspired by the Michaelmas daisy - the flower of St Michael, the patron saint of Police. For AFP members, daisy pins are available from your local work location.

Whether you attend an event, share a tribute, wear a Daisy pin, share a social media post, have a chat with a colleague, or support the work of AFP Legacy in another way, your involvement helps make a real difference to the lives of those we support.

It’s important to acknowledge that we couldn’t provide this level of support without you. Every donation helps us continue supporting our legatees and their families. 💙

As a not-for-profit charity, AFP Legacy also relies on the dedication of AFP members who generously volunteer their personal time. While much of this work happens behind the scenes, our volunteers are supporting kids camps, organising community events and barbecues, running charity golf days, participating in Legacy activities, and providing practical support to colleagues and families when it matters most.

To our volunteers, donors, and supporters—thank you. Your commitment helps us continue our legacy. 💙

Huge shoutout to the Brad Hardy Foundation!

BHF continue to support the policing community by taking part in Run4Blue 💙

BHF recently held their annual walk in Canberra which had a massive turnout and raised thousands of dollars to support the wellbeing of AFP officers through early intervention programs, wellness sessions, and ongoing care.

They are a non-profit established in memory of Brad Hardy, who was tragically lost on 6 March 2021.

Brad was a dedicated young AFP officer, committed to protecting and serving his community, and always going out of his way to support others.

Kenny Koala has gone international! 🇦🇺✈️🇫🇷

After making his way to France for ANZAC Day at Villers-Bretonneux, he seems to have found a new home 🐨

Kenny has been happily adopted by Commander Zali and Gendarmerie de la Somme!

From what we hear, he’s already settling in and enjoying some nice croissants 🥐

Do you have some stories or images to share of your Kenny? Post it in the comments!

To honour what they gave is to appreciate what we have.

Today, AFP Legacy recognises all who have served our nation, whether in wars, conflicts, peacekeeping or other operations.

Join us in honouring them by wearing a sprig of rosemary, attending an ANZAC Day service, or donating to the ANZAC Appeal.

Saturday night was one to remember at the NSW Police Legacy Blue Ribbon Ball 💙🎗️

Our AFP Legacy board members were proud to join our mates at NSW Police Legacy for their biggest Blue Ribbon fundraiser yet.

It was a fantastic evening of camaraderie, support, and shared commitment to honouring and supporting the families of fallen Police.
