Dissonance Dissonance explores the ideas of blurring the lines between fashion, music and art. The work shows a theatrical approach to design, not only being something worn but taking a concept and exploring it through design. Sculptural patternmaking pushes the boundaries of design, thinking about the body as…

U.L.E.
Designer Morgan Hubbard is enormously passionate about environmental issues and sustainability, and her label U.L.E. embodies this. With a focus on natural fibres and fabric-dyeing techniques, her collection’s soft hues of fawn and lilac had me thinking of Anne Geddes’s illustrations—okay, no babies and no gumnuts, but more the allusion to washed-out colours of the bush. In terms of structure, U.L.E. saw wide-legged pants, juxtaposed cut-out vests, soft midi dresses and apron-like overlays, styling unique prints against pale blocked greys. The cuts actually reminded me a lot of Mongolia, perhaps combined with the muted hues and dusty patterns. A feature I absolutely loved was the semi-circle panelling on some of the garments.

"Serenaded energetically by a live and exuberant violinist, U.L.E by Morgan Hubbard stepped out next and was a tribute to sustainability in fashion. Hand dyed fabrics of varying transparency were transformed with cut outs, peel backs, structural and deliberate darting and emanated a total look of natural, environmental beauty."

"The understated tones and attention to detail in Morgan Hubbard’s collection were delicious. Earthy creams, mushrooms, olives and charcoal – there was a real earthy and mellow vibe to her pieces. I wasn’t surprised then to read part of U.L.E’s stance with promoting environmental and social sustainability – the palette just screamed Canberra."
