Incredible Insects - spiny leaf insects Canberra

And we are all out! All the stickies have gone to their new home. We have a couple of girls who have reached maturity and should start laying soon, so watch this space and we should have some more towards the end of the year.

Ok, we have 5 girls and 7 boys available and would like them to go to their new homes ASAP.

Ok .... So this AI picture is terrible 😂 BUT I have been told that in Canberra teachers are allowed to have Spiny Leaf Insects in their classrooms, red tape free!

In fact over the years we have supplied many spiny leaf insects to teachers all over Canberra and surrounds.

As of 28th January we still have approximately 15 young stick insects available and ready to go to their new homes. There are currently male and female offspring and there is some colour variety in the older stickies, although we only have a handful of girls left and 11 males available so we are limiting 1 female per purchase. There is no limit on the males.

I do expect to sell out in the next couple of weeks, so please let me know soon if you are interested.

Also available are pop up mesh enclosures for $25 (enclosure only) - $40 (includes solid base for better stability and ease of cleaning) These make a great home for stick insects.

What we have left:

* Small and large teens - very small adults, still have a couple of moults left. Easy to identify gender.

Costs are:

Bigger toddler / Teens - $7.50 each or 3 for $20
Adults (when available) $10.00 each

We have sold all our nymphs (or they have grown) and have not had any more hatchlings for a while so I think we won't have any new nymphs until our current teens become adults and start laying eggs. Probably next spring is when they will start to hatch.

In the meantime we still have plenty of toddlers (small with only one moult) and large (with a couple of moults) and quite a few teens still available with 3 or 4 moults.

Prices are $5 for small toddlers and $7.50 for large toddlers / teens (or 3 for $ 20).

These are the different moult stages that the males go through. The wings start developing after moult 4 & 5 and are fully functional by their last moult.

This is an example of what females looks like at each stage (after a moult).They start life smaller than a 5c coin and can grow as big as 20cm as a fully grown adult. The females can also outlive the males by a full year.

This is a teen male (you can tell by his straighter bump free tail) who just moulted within the last 5 minutes. He will regain his strength for a little bit and then will consume his moult or exoskeleton. Weird I know!

Managed to capture a teen male moulting this morning. This is most likely his third moult meaning he still has a couple more before he becomes a full grown male. The girls go through 6 moults, while the boys will moult 5 times.

We're back!.... we had one very healthy mama spiny leaf insect this year who laid a couple of hundred eggs, so we have a lot of young stick insects ready to go to their new homes. There are both male and female offspring and there is some colour variety in the older stickies.

They range in age from a week to several months old, and we have available:

* Nymphs - very young - newly hatched to a month old

* Toddler - these don't move as fast as nymphs and have a more traditional shape. Sometimes possible to identify gender depending on size.

* Teens - very small adults, still have a couple of moults left. Easy to identify gender

* Adults - not yet available

Costs are:

Nymphs - $4 each or 3 for $10
Toddler / Teens - $7.50 each or 3 for $20
Adults (when available) $12.50 each

Pick up is from Belconnen (I can arrange to leave them out so you can collect at a time convenient for you) or possibly collection from the city a couple of days a week.
