COULD YOUR MEDICATIONS BE INCREASING YOUR FALL RISK?

Many medications can affect balance, alertness, and blood pressure.

Common side effects include:
🔹 Dizziness
🔹 Drowsiness
🔹 Blurred vision
🔹 Reduced balance
🔹 Light-headedness

If you or a loved one has experienced a fall or near miss, it may be worth discussing medications with your GP or pharmacist.

Never stop medication without professional advice, but regular reviews can help reduce risks.

DID YOU KNOW?

AMBULANCE SERVICES OFFER MORE THAN JUST TRANSPORT TO HOSPITAL 🚑

Many people think calling an ambulance automatically means a trip to hospital.

Paramedics can:
✔ Assess injuries and illnesses
✔ Check vital signs
✔ Monitor blood pressure
✔ Assess falls and mobility issues
✔ Provide treatment on scene
✔ Connect patients with appropriate healthcare services

Every situation is different, and paramedics are highly trained to determine the best course of action.

If you’re unsure whether a fall requires medical attention, seek advice immediately.

🩺 COULD YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE BE CAUSING FALLS? 🩺

Many older Australians experience dizziness when standing up too quickly.

This can happen due to:
✔ Low blood pressure
✔ Dehydration
✔ Certain medications
✔ Heart conditions

If you feel light-headed:
➡ Sit down immediately
➡ Take your time when standing
➡ Stay hydrated
➡ Speak with your GP

A moment of dizziness can lead to a serious fall, so don’t ignore the warning signs.

⚠️ WHAT’S HIDING IN YOUR HOME? ⚠️

Many falls happen because of everyday hazards we no longer notice.

Take a walk through your home and look for:
🔹 Loose mats and rugs
🔹 Electrical cords across walkways
🔹 Clutter in hallways
🔹 Uneven pathways
🔹 Wet bathroom floors
🔹 Poor lighting at night

A quick home safety check could prevent a serious injury.

Sometimes it’s the smallest obstacle that causes the biggest accident.

FALLS ARE NOT A NORMAL PART OF AGEING

Did you know that one in three people over the age of 65 experience a fall each year?

While ageing can bring changes in balance, strength, and mobility, falls are often preventable. However if you are prone to falls it may be a good idea to discuss fall prevention strategies and aids with your Doctor, my aged care provider and your family.

Some common causes include:
✔ Poor lighting
✔ Loose rugs and cords
✔ Slippery floors
✔ Poor footwear
✔ Medication side effects
✔ Vision changes

Taking a few simple steps around the home can significantly reduce the risk of falls and help maintain independence.

Let’s work together to keep our loved ones safe, confident, and mobile.

Hi, I’m Maria – the face behind Making Connections Support Services.

I thought it was time to properly introduce myself and share a little about who I am and why I do what I do.

If you’ve met me, worked with me, or had a conversation with me, you may have noticed that I ask a lot of questions. Sometimes I probably come across as a little nosey, overly involved, or like I care too much.

The truth is… I do care.

I care deeply about the people I support and their families. I want to know what’s happening because I want to make sure they are receiving the support they need, the funding they deserve, and every opportunity available to help them live their best life.

I believe every person deserves to be heard, respected, valued, and empowered to make their own choices. My role isn’t to take over—it’s to walk alongside people, advocate when needed, and help them navigate what can often feel like an overwhelming system.

Whether it’s helping someone access services, attend appointments, build confidence, maintain independence, achieve personal goals, or simply have someone in their corner, I’m committed to making a difference.

I will always advocate for what is in the best interests of my clients. I will always ask questions when something doesn’t seem right. And I will always strive to ensure the people I support have the best possible chance to live the life they want and deserve.

Making Connections Support Services isn’t just a business to me—it’s a passion, a purpose, and a commitment to helping people thrive.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted me to be part of their journey. ❤️

IT’S OKAY TO ACCEPT HELP

Many of us have spent our lives taking care of others. We worked hard, raised families, supported friends, and carried responsibilities without asking for much in return.

But there comes a time when accepting support becomes just as important as giving it.

Whether it’s a lift to an appointment, help with the shopping, or someone preparing a meal, accepting assistance isn’t giving up your independence—it’s helping you maintain it.

What is one thing someone has helped you with recently that made your day easier?
