Pauline Hanson’s scary “they don’t speak English” number includes babies.

Actual babies.

That tells you everything.

She didn’t say “people who struggle with English.”

She didn’t say “self-reported Census answers that the ABS says should be treated carefully.”

She grabbed the biggest, scariest number she could find and waved it around like proof Australia is being overrun.

But here’s the bit she hoped nobody would check.

Of the 872,000 figure, over three quarters were people who said they speak English “not well”.

Not “not at all”.

Not “can’t function”.

Not “refuse to learn”.

Just “not well”.

And when you zoom in on the group who said they speak English “not at all”, most are Australian citizens.

Then it gets even worse for Pauline.

About half of those citizens are babies.

Babies.

Pauline Hanson is out here trying to turn infants into a culture war.

This isn’t “telling it like it is”.

It’s taking a Census figure, stripping out the context, ignoring the warning labels, and hoping people are angry enough not to ask questions.

That’s not honesty.

That’s fear dressed up as maths.

And once you need to count babies as a national threat to make your argument work, maybe your argument was rubbish to begin with.

Για πόσο καιρό η επίκληση του ηρωικού παρελθόντος και οι αναφορές στον Ανδρέα Παπανδρέου, στον Κώστα Σημίτη, στον Γιώργο Γεννηματά, στη Μελίνα Μερκούρη μπορούν να αιμοδοτούν το σημερινό ΠΑΣΟΚ; Δυστυχώς, για τους σημερινούς ενοίκους της Χαριλάου Τρικούπη δεν αρκούν οι μνήμες για να κρατηθεί ένα κόμμα, όσο θαυμαστή ιστορία κι αν έχει, στη ζωή.

Ξεκινήσαμε το σημερινό μας άρθρο για την #Κεντροαριστερά από το ΠΑΣΟΚ επειδή, ως αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση, αυτό θα έπρεπε να έχει τον πρώτο λόγο στη συγκρότηση των κοινωνικών και πολιτικών συμμαχιών που θα μετατρέψει τη δυσαρέσκεια των πολιτών σε κοινοβουλευτική και κυβερνητική πλειοψηφία. Βέβαια, στους περίεργους καιρούς που ζούμε αποδεικνύεται ότι το πλεονέκτημα της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης όχι μόνο δεν είναι σημαντικό στη δρομολόγηση των πολιτικών εξελίξεων στο κυβερνητικό παιχνίδι, αλλά και βραχυκυκλώνει δραματικά την Κεντροαριστερά στην προσπάθειά της να αμφισβητήσει την πρωτοκαθεδρία της συντηρητικής παράταξης.

Για πρώτη φορά στη #Μεταπολίτευση, σε μια βουλευτική περίοδο, έχουμε όχι μία, αλλά τέσσερις αξιωματικές αντιπολιτεύσεις. Μία εκλογική, τον #ΣΥΡΙΖΑ, αφού αυτός ήρθε δεύτερος, με 47 βουλευτές, στις εκλογές του 2023. Μία θεσμική, το ΠΑΣΟΚ, αφού μετά την εξάχνωση της Κουμουνδούρου αυτό έγινε, με 32 βουλευτές, αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση. Μία δημοσκοπική, αφού η #ΕΛΑΣ του Αλέξη Τσίπρα, χωρίς κανέναν βουλευτή, δείχνει, σύμφωνα με όλες τις έρευνες, να έχει καπαρώσει τη δεύτερη θέση αφήνοντας το ΠΑΣΟΚ στην τρίτη και μάλιστα με τον Νίκο Ανδρουλάκη να νιώθει καυτή την ανάσα της Μαρίας Καρυστιανού.

Και μία δυνητική, αφού για πρώτη φορά στα μεταπολιτευτικά χρονικά υπάρχουν 40 ανεξάρτητοι βουλευτές, οι οποίοι σε περίπτωση που αποφάσιζαν να συγκροτήσουν Κοινοβουλευτική Ομάδα, θα έπαιρναν αυτοί τον τίτλο -και τα σχετικά προνόμια- της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης. Να σημειώσουμε ότι θα μπορούσε να υπάρξει και μια πέμπτη αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση, η οποία μάλιστα θα είχε αλλάξει άρδην τις κομματικές εξελίξεις και ίσως να είχε καταστήσει απαγορευτική την επιστροφή Τσίπρα. Εάν είχε γίνει δεκτή από τη #ΝέαΑριστερά η πρόταση του Αλέξη Χαρίτση για ένωση με τον ΣΥΡΙΖΑ, θα είχαμε αλλαγή στη θέση της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, καθώς το νέο σχήμα θα είχε 37 βουλευτές, έναντι 32 του ΠΑΣΟΚ."

" risks missing the deeper issue at hand. For most Australians, the unease driving these arguments is not actually about , or , although these are the most visible markers in everyday life. It reflects a broader sense that is under strain as Australian society is becoming more atomised, more siloed and less connected.

This has less to do with cultural itself, and more to do with the erosion of the shared that once brought Australians together. Over time, many of the mass membership institutions that encouraged structured and regular everyday interactions have weakened. Membership of political parties, trade unions, churches and civic associations has declined — people just aren’t joining groups as much as they used to. are smaller, more casualised, or less stable with fewer people having a career for life with a single employer. has become more socially stratified, with the shift towards private education contributing to significant socio-economic segregation. Residential patterns, too, increasingly reflect income and class divisions, producing distinct geographic clusters.

The cumulative effect is that the “micropublics” of everyday life — the shared spaces where people routinely encounter those unlike themselves — are becoming less common. These spaces matter because it is through regular, low-stakes interaction in workplaces, schools, sports clubs and communities that people learn to navigate differences, whether it be cultural, economic, educational or political. Social cohesion is not simply a matter of shared values declared in the abstract; it is built through the shared experience of living together.

A that continues to offer more and more individual choice over every aspect of life can, unintentionally, allow people to opt out of these everyday encounters of difference. We can choose where to live, where to send our children to school, where to , the media we consume and even which communities we engage with often in ways that minimise friction and maximise familiarity — but in doing so, we may also reduce the everyday contact that makes a diverse society feel manageable."

The current debate about multiculturalism is built on a false dichotomy - ABC Religion & Ethics Pauline Hanson’s recent speech to the National Press Club, where she declared that “we cannot be a multicultural society” and that Australia “must be monocultural” has reignited a familiar and polarising debate about multiculturalism.
