Arlo is a beautiful 3-year-old Great Dane with the gentlest soul. While he may look like a giant, underneath is a sensitive, affectionate boy who is still learning that the world isn't quite so scary.

Arlo has been with the same family since he was just 8 weeks old. He grew up living indoors with three special needs children and, by all accounts, was wonderful with them. He also happily shared his home with cats, small pets, reptiles and another dog. Sadly, due to a change in circumstances, Arlo was surrendered.

Because Arlo was never really socialised or taken out beyond his property, the outside world feels overwhelming to him. When faced with something unfamiliar, he tends to freeze and bark rather than investigate. The lovely thing about Arlo, though, is how quickly he responds to kindness. A soft voice, a few tasty treats and a little patience are often all it takes for his tail to start wagging.

Since arriving in care, Arlo's confidence has grown every day. He now enjoys leash walks with multiple staff members, loves off-lead playtime, and has made friends with a variety of dogs, including puppies. He's especially fond of squeaky toys, tug games and, most of all, being close to his people.

Arlo is noticeably more comfortable with women initially, although once he knows and trusts someone, his affectionate, goofy personality shines through. He has always been an indoor dog, has never slept outside, and loves nothing more than companionship.

He hasn't had much formal training, but he's eager to learn and responds beautifully to gentle, positive reinforcement.

Health-wise, Arlo is doing well. He arrived with a sensitive tummy and is currently thriving on a Royal Canin Sensitivity Control diet. Life in a shelter can be pretty overwhelming for the most well adjusted dogs. For this reason he has been trialling anxiety medication which he is responding well too.

Arlo's ideal home would be with someone experienced with Great Danes or large, nervous breeds who understands that trust takes time. A calm, confident canine companion would be a huge bonus, helping him continue to build confidence and show him that the world is full of good things.

Arlo isn't looking for perfection—he's simply looking for someone willing to believe in him. With patience, love and gentle guidance, this sweet giant has all the makings of an incredibly loyal and devoted best friend.
