Narryna is a gem of Australian colonial architecture containing a rich collection of Tasmanian fine and decorative arts and social history.

Narryna is a gem of Australian colonial architecture containing a rich collection of Tasmanian fine and decorative arts. The fine Greek Revival town house was built by Captain Andrew Haig in 1837-40. Haig purchased the land holding in 1824 in the course of a lucrative trading voyage between Calcutta, Canton and Valparaiso. Haig built warehouses facing Salamanca Place in 1834 and set up as a merchant and shipbuilder while also operating goods and passenger services to mainland ports. Haig was forced to sell up after an economic downturn hit the Australian colonies in 1842. Narryna was later the residence of an array of Hobart businessmen and women, lawyers, politicians and bankers. In 1955 it became Australia's first folk museum through the efforts of local residents who formed a collection that is redolent of the mercantile and maritime histories of Salamanca Place and Battery Point. We invite you to step into Narryna for a rich experience of early colonial life.

Every year, thousands of visitors walk through the doors of Narryna to discover the stories of the people who shaped early Hobart. School children experience history beyond the pages of a textbook, families explore one of Australia's finest colonial houses, and visitors from around the world gain a deeper understanding of Tasmania's past.

None of this happens by accident.

Every donation helps us care for our historic house, conserve our collection, create exhibitions and tours, and continue sharing these stories with our community.

As 30 June approaches, there's still time to make a tax-deductible gift and help ensure Narryna remains a place where history continues to inspire.

Did you know Narryna House & Garden was Australia's very first folk museum?

We love opening our doors to show visitors what life looked like in 1840s Tasmania. However, safeguarding an early colonial property and its artefacts takes substantial resources.

As a not-for-profit museum supported by an incredible volunteer community, donations are what keep our operations steady, our gardens tended, and our history intact.

If you've enjoyed visiting Narryna, attending an event, volunteering with us or simply value the preservation of Tasmania's heritage, please consider making a tax-deductible donation before 30 June.
