Record fields led to an increase in both performances and general team spirit and camaraderie with over 1500 school and club athletes involved today at the Queensland Athletics Cross Country Relay Championships at Nudgee College.
There is quite a bit of illness around st present so our aspirational goal of 30 teams was in reality cut back to 26 in the end but that was still the highest number of teams for any club thanks to the tireless team management efforts of Rob Hurley and Ken Hastie.
We had six teams get into the medals and there was a lot of depths through the ranks with a number of other teams on the heels of the placegetters as well.
Overall a fantastic team effort and with double points on offer we will hopefully go further in front on the SEQ Cross Country Series pointscore.

A record 516 teams with 303 from schools and 213 from clubs are entered for tomorrow’s State Cross Country Relays at Nudgee College.
And the weather should be very conducive sunny with a top of 23 degrees.
Please arrive at the Ashgrove tent an hour before your event and if you can’t make it for any reason let Rob Hurley, Ken Hastie, Tony Usher or John Purcell know.
It was New Zealand’s legendary coach Arthur Lydiard who once remarked that there were champions waiting to be developed in every neighbourhood so it’s good to see the overall number of teams at this event increasing as schools and clubs from across the South-East put in considerable effort to provide pathways for athletes of all ages as the excitement of 2032 looms.
It’s fair to say that as time has gone on we understand much better the benefits that our own sport offers for the average person to practice the fundamental functional movements of running, jumping and throwing in athletics that underpin all sports.
Little Athletics, parkrun, school competition, recreational running, Trail Running and Masters Athletics provide a wide cross-section of opportunities that have now made the various forms of athletics more part of the Australian lifestyle than perhaps anywhere else on the planet.
As Ashgrove’s Rangers hits a total of 242 members and with active competitors aged 7 to 79, tomorrow will represent the largest turnout for us at an event since we started in 1962 in an era where the opportunities to compete in a sport for life around our area have never been greater thanks to a large number of enthusiastic helpers and supporters across many local athletic organisations.
Best of luck to all athletes, schools and clubs competing!

Well done to Rob Hurley for his exceptional job of team management so far and to everyone for the terrific response.
Please try to get out to Nudgee an hour before your event.
If something pops up and you are unable to make it just contact Rob, Ken Hastie, Tony Usher or John Purcell or just reply to this post.

Still some calls to sort a couple of things out tonight but here’s a provisional list of the 30 teams entered for Saturday’s State Cross Country Relays at Nudgee along with the programme.
If anyone is in a team but unavailable please let Rob Hurley, Ken Hastie, Tony Usher or John Purcell know or just reply to this post.
Please try to be at the Ashgrove Rangers tent if possible an hour before your event so we know you are about to give you your race number and so that we can avoid last minute phone calls.
Programme is also shown here along with the SEQ Series Points Ladder which shows tight battles that should give incentive to all of the top 8 clubs given it’s double points on the line for this round.

This Saturday’s State Cross Country Relays event has a long history and represents a coming together of the local schools and clubs that provide pathways in Cross Country to produce a massive day of competition for athletes of all standards.
Since the early 1980s the event has had a variety of venues including Beerburrum Forest, Kallinga Park and Rivermount College.
It has bounced back and forwards to the current venue of Nudgee College quite a few times with at least four different courses having been used on different parts of the school grounds.
Brisbane State High School has picked up a lot of wins in the school competitions over the years.
On the Clubs side, Athletics North have been the benchmark in recent years on although they are likely to face strong teams this year from Regional areas like the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Darling Downs.
With double points on the line for the SEQ Cross Country Series and only 3 points behind us, Toowong Harriers are also going to be right in contention.
With interest in the sport getting larger than ever before approaching 2032,the greater the number of strong schools and clubs we have out there to service and develop it the better off we will all be.
If anyone is not already in a team for us but would like to compete, just reply to this post or let Rob Hurley or Ken Hastie know at training at The Gap High tonight ahead of tomorrow’s teams entry deadline.
