From my first event win to my second Australian Championship.
What a season it has been.
First of all I have to thank all the track staff, safety crew, firies, volunteers and the tracks who make this series possible without you guys none of this happens.
To win my first Top Sportsman Championship, I’m honestly very proud and grateful. There’s been a lot of sleepless nights, time and effort put into this.
Congratulations to Darryl Stevens it was a close championship battle all season. We faced off many times and it was always tight. Well done.
Working on one car is hard enough, but behind the scenes I’ve been working on and servicing all 3 of Dad’s cars which I do myself. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, but I’ve always learned from them.
Everything I know has been self-taught over the years from YouTube, the internet, and most importantly from some very good people along the way.
Terry Watt (teaching me suspension and the technical side of these cars),
David Baines (always picking up the phone even the 1 hour post race debrief calls, something I don’t take for granted),
Bill from BK Race Engines (for trusting me with the setup on Dad’s Mustang and always being there when needed).
Over the years doing all the servicing and tuning on the cars, racing nearly every weekend it’s taken a lot of time, but it’s always worth it.
More recently the boys at THR Developments Nick and Tommo (Georgie Boy) have come along and helped massively, to the point where I don’t even have to lay a finger on the car.
To everyone else who’s helped me this season Hugo (taught me a lot), Mel (keeping the socials alive), Mark (always looking after me), Maxi (continuous support since I started racing), George, Michael, Peter, my sister Katarina (for controlling Dad when he’s angry at me 😂), Cindy, Dean (the sh*t talk that turned into motivation), Kim, Max, Seth, Emily and many others along the way who I may have missed thank you.
And now the most important person my Dad.
Not many people my age get the opportunity to race, let alone chase championships multiple times and that’s something I’ll never take for granted.
We’ve had our arguments and we don’t always agree, but everything he’s done has shaped me into who I am today.
When I was younger while my mates had the latest Xbox games, I didn’t even have a subscription to play online. I used to get told “is it your birthday, is it Christmas, no, then no.”
At the time I didn’t understand it, but now I do. It taught me the value of working for what you want and not expecting anything to be handed to you.
For that I am forever grateful.
To all the competitors you are all tough racers in one of the toughest brackets where the margin for error is next to none. Respect to all of you keep pushing.
I’m a big believer that complacency is a killer in this sport. You can’t stand still you’ve always got to be looking at ways to improve your program because if you’re not moving forward you’re going backwards.
Next year I’ll be pushing even harder with everything I’ve learned this season and we may even see two VT Racing cars chasing the championship.
In the offseason I’ll be training like no tomorrow in the gym I want to come into next season starting in August in the best shape of my life both physically and mentally.
As you’ll see in the photos, this one means a lot. And in the video, that was my first ever event win a few years ago on Easter. Looking back at that moment compared to now securing my second Australian Championship really shows how far things have come.
This was the first time we’ve raced together like this and considering the lack of preparation time between rounds the crew did an exceptional job turning the cars around. At the start of the meeting crew members were jumping between cars something I didn’t want. I wanted each car to have its own crew especially with some guys stepping into roles they hadn’t done before. There was a bit of hesitation early but by the end everyone had stepped up, owned their role and executed even critical jobs like guiding the car back which can’t be messed up. That progression says a lot and it was a fantastic result. We’re not far off being ready for a serious two car championship chase.
Once again I am forever grateful for this result it took a lot of time and effort and we’ll be pushing for more.
Thank you
Tommy
