Meet Archer — who has just completed his final ENDIA Study visit! 🌟

From infancy right through to now, Archer and his family have been part of something big: helping our researchers understand what drives Type 1 diabetes risk in children, so future generations might be diagnosed earlier — or even avoid it altogether oneday.

Every visit, every sample, every questionnaire from families like Archer's has added another piece to the puzzle. Thank you, Archer, for your dedication and for being such an important part of the ENDIA story. 💙

Could the "good" compounds our gut bacteria make from fibre affect a child's risk of type 1 diabetes? Our team tested this using over 1,100 stool samples from ENDIA mums and bubs — comparing children who developed islet autoimmunity with those who didn't. 💩🧫

The reassuring result: these gut bacteria byproducts (called SCFAs; short chain fatty acids) were not linked to islet autoimmunity risk. Levels looked similar across both groups, up to the appearance of islet autoimmunity. ✅

Along the way, we spotted some expected patterns too — SCFA levels rose steadily in bub's first year, and jumped noticeably once solid foods were introduced. A nice reminder of how quickly little gut microbiomes respond to new foods! 🥑🍠

SCFA were reduced in the mums living with T1D compared to the mums without the condition, but this didn’t change the babies' risk of islet autoimmunity. This means that SCFA may play a role later on in T1D progression, something we are still working on.

This finding helps rule out one piece of the puzzle, so we can continue on our quest. Thank you to every ENDIA family who contributed a sample — this is your research in action.

Behind every good study is a very good administrator!

Thank you and farewell to Leanne. Leanne was the backbone of ENDIA. We couldn’t possibly list the myriad of responsibilities Leanne undertook to keep ENDIA running behind the scenes.

We will all miss her level head, can-do attitude and warm smile from the ENDIA team.

We will endeavour to keep the ship sailing without you, Leanne, but it does feel like the wind has been taken from our sails a little without you around.

Thank you very much for participating in the ENDIA Study with nurse, Sue.

You were a fabulous participant and provided unique and valuable samples for type 1 diabetes research.

We wish you every success for the future which we know will be bright.

Fabulous Finley. He was really proud of his medal and certificate given at his final study visit.

The participation certificates outline how many visits, poops, wees, swabs, and blood samples each child has contributed to this research into the causes of type 1 diabetes.

All these samples are stored in a biobank for analysis. Each one precious and unique. But in combination with all the others may just unlock the key! Thank you Finley. And thank you to your mum and dad for helping you help us.

Well done to Tasman who has been an absolute star with his blood tests for the ENDIA Study.

We thought he deserved a big shiny gold medal to acknowledge how hard and how brave these blood tests can be.

His little sister was in awe of that medal. We have no doubt one day you’ll earn your own medal, Aurora!
