Alexandra Frost
Adelaide based female vocalist with a rich, deep voice destined for cabaret, jazz & blues.
Created and performed 5 star cabaret show Hear My Voice for Adelaide Fringe.
Last night (yes it's now almost 1am) at Gingers was an absolutely fabulous gig! Beautiful audience, many new faces and many familiar ones too. All there to support quality local music and cabaret. I can't thank you all enough for supporting the Alexandra Frost Duo. Ed's playing was as always truly remarkable. I enjoyed singing every note. A special evening indeed.
We are looking forward to returning on Friday January 30, 2026 and are planning on more regular shows at Ginger's Vintage Lounge Bar next year so we'd love to see you again at another performance. We are also looking at some other opportunities yet to be decided for 2026 so watch this space, follow me here or on Instagram and sign up at alexandrafrost.com/contact/ to our mailing list for the latest news about what's ahead.
The joy of music is something that is always worth sharing and we can never underestimate the power of it to reach us emotionally and make us feel grateful for those who came before us and shaped our love for it. The artists that we honoured last night , all legends, all criticised for something about their voice but they turned this into their signature. What a lesson it is in letting your light shine, no matter what others say. Until next year, keep supporting live music, sing with your loved ones and take the time to remember those who shaped you both personally and musically. As Gregory Porter said, "we are like children, we're painted on canvases, picking up shades as we go".
Tonight is the night for our performance at Ginger's Vintage Lounge Bar and we are excited to bring you a selection of wonderful music and stories from artists who refused to be boxed in and eventually became legendary for the very things that made them stand out.
Stories of Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Gregory Porter & more - woven with my own journey finding my voice and sense of identity.
A few seats still available for tonight at Ginger's.

The night Gregory Porter taught me what it means to truly own your voice....
I've written about what happened that night in October at Hamer Hall at Melbourne Jazz Festival - watching Gregory command the stage with complete authenticity, that signature flat cap, that incredibly smooth baritone and the intention to connect to the audience in a way that drew you in and made you forget how many people were there.
He didn't try to fit anyone's mould. He didn't apologise for his distinctive style. He just was unashamedly himself. He drew on his roots, he brought us into the music and encouraged us to clap and to sing. It was pure bliss.
The audience was transfixed.
For years, I thought my voice was too deep, too different with too much vibrato, not clean enough, not high enough.... the list goes on. Watching Gregory that night in Hamer Hall in Melbourne, I realised: The artists who often move us aren't the ones who always fit the mould. They are the ones who break it. They are the ones who bring their heart, their life experience and all their musical influences to the stage and find their own voice.

On November 29 at Ginger's Vintage Lounge Bar, I'm celebrating Gregory alongside other voices both classic and contemporaries including Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Tracy Chapman and Γdith Piaf - voices that refused to be anything but themselves.

Why authentic jazz matters: What I learned from Gregory Porter Watching Gregory Porter at Melbourne Jazz Festival taught me what it means to truly own your voice. For artists who've been told they're "too different."
The voices that refused to fit the mould....
For years, I felt my contralto voice was too deep. Others always seemed shocked by it, some said it had too much vibrato.
Then I discovered voices like Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf among many. Every single one of them faced similar criticisms. They were told their voices or they didn't belong. Nina was too angry. Ella had the wrong look. Edith was told she was too raw. They didn't change. They became legends by refusing to fit the mould.
On November 29 at Ginger's Vintage Lounge Bar, Ed Heddle and I are celebrating the music and stories from artists like this, how they shaped my own life and development and the courage it takes to embrace what makes you different.
From jazz to blues, soul to cabaret, we'll share the music and the stories of artists who transformed criticism or heartache into power and strength. This is for anyone who's ever been told they're "too something." Too loud, too quiet, too different, too much, not enough.
Come experience an evening where authentic voices and vintage atmosphere create something unforgettable.

I remember Year 11 French class well with Madame Fennell. We were listening to Γdith Piaf when something stopped me cold. That vibrato. That deep, raw, unapologetic sound. For the first time, I heard my own voice and vibrato in someone else's.
I'd already started to notice how different my voice was and often wondered whether the depth and my vibrato were too much and would never be accepted by others. I couldn't easily sing along with many female singers and my voice sounded less pure and just different.
But here was Piaf - small, fierce, refusing to be anything but herself. Her vibrato wasn't a flaw. It was her power, as was her raw deep voice and ability to express herself emotionally. In that moment, I felt a little less strange. A little less alone. A little more like my voice was ok to have.
On November 29 at Gingers, I'm celebrating the artists who taught me that "different" doesn't mean you are "wrong". Γdith Piaf. Nina Simone. Ella Fitzgerald. Aretha Franklin. Gregory Porter. Tracy Chapman, .
Every voice that was told it didn't belong.

For everyone who's ever found themselves with an unexpected voice and values uniqueness in everyone. See you on Saturday November 29π΅
Our November show as the Alexandra Frost Duo is approaching and I've been spending some time researching the legends I'll be honoring on Saturday November 29 at Ginger's Vintage Lounge Bar including Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Gregory Porter, Edith Piaf among many others.
And here's what I discovered: Every single one of them was told their voice or something about them was wrong or difficult. Nina was perceived as too angry. Ella had the wrong look, Aretha was too soulful for pop. Gregory was too old. Edith wasn't refined enough.
And what about my own contralto voice? I've been told it's too deep, too different, that it has too much vibrato. I've been asked if I smoked too many ci******es when younger, I've had my gender questioned and I've been told my voice had too much vibrato.
But these artists taught me something profound: they never moved away from what made them distinctive. They leaned into what critics called "wrong." , and that's exactly what made them legendary. They also had their personal challenges and their music was a vehicle for expression, for connection, for comfort, for making a stand and for standing up for what was right and just.
That's what this evening is about - not just great music or entertainment, but celebrating the voices that shaped me, how music affects and changes us and the courage it takes to embrace your authentic voice.
If you've ever been told you're "too something" - too loud, too quiet, too much, not enough - this one's for you.
If the songs and style of various artists have peppered your life and been a part of pivotal moments, creating memories that have lasted - this one's for you.
If music has the power to affect you emotionally, if the best performances are those that linger long after the night ends for their intimacy, the lyrics, the musicianship and the emotional expression, this one's for you.

Three weeks until an intimate evening of jazz, blues and cabaret at Gingers - and I'm immersed in the work right now - writing the setlist, gearing up for rehearsals with Ed, and researching the stories behind these incredible artists.
Nina Simone. Ella Fitzgerald. Aretha Franklin. Gregory Porter. Edith Piaf. Tracy Chapman....and more..... such diverse stories and interesting histories.
The more I dig into their lives and what drove them to make the music they made, the more this evening is shaping up to be something really special. These weren't just great voices. These were vocalists who refused to compromise who they were and who often found their own way of being themselves, often in spite of public reactions and expectations.
With a voice that has always stood out, I've learned to embrace this too and it's fascinating to realise that the voices I was drawn to also had their own challenges, triumphs and motivation to do what they did regardless...
Three weeks until we share it all with you at Ginger's VintageGinger's. It's intimate. It's vulnerable. It will make you laugh and possibly cry. It's the kind of evening that stays with you.

This is "Feeling Good" - one of the Nina Simone classics we'll be performing at Gingers. There will be no auto-tune, no backing tracks, no production tricks. Just voice and keyboard, creating something real in the moment.
Here's what you'll experience on November 29:
Ed Heddle and I taking you through the music of many of the great jazz, blues, soul and gospel artists such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, Gregory Porter, Diana Krall, Tracy Chapman, and Edith Piaf.
Between the songs, I'll share the personal stories - theirs and mine - about finding your voice and identity when the world tells you it doesn't fit conventional expectations or when life throws you challenges.
It's intimate. It's vulnerable. It will make you laugh and possibly cry. It's the kind of evening that stays with you.
