🎂 Happy Birthday Horses of Breakout Creek! 🎂

August 1st is the official Birthday for Horses in the southern hemisphere.

The horses are loving being back for their birthdays!!

Reggie has arrived this morning, bringing our little group of horses up to five!

Big thanks to the amazing team at Champions Horse Transport for getting our reluctant traveler safely back to his much loved home on Breakout Creek at last!

🐴 Jack was extremely helpful when we went to visit him this week at Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari.

He showed us the new signs which detail how best to enjoy your visit:

- Please stay on the correct side of the fence.
- Make sure children are supervised at all times.
- Look after your dog. The horses are much bigger and stronger, so keep your dog safe next to you.

If you want to pat the horses:

- Please be gentle and approach them with care.
- If the horses are scared, they can bite and kick, or run quickly which might scare you.

The horses don’t need any extra food, but if you must:

- Only feed the horses lengthwise-cut pieces of carrot or cut pieces of apple.
- Keep your hand flat and your fingers safe – they have big teeth.
- The horse’s owners have asked us to remind you that feeding them is at your own risk, so be careful.

Tomorrow marks one week of the horses being back!!!

We’ve been getting lots of questions which has been great - so we will start posting some of the most frequent for a while so you can get to know them a little more - let’s start with the most frequent question:

Why is that horse lying down - I thought they sleep standing up?

Horses frequently lie down during the day, they enjoy this rest, and this sleep is important for their wellbeing, please do not disturb them when you see them resting, they are ok!

Often in a large group one horse will stay standing to ‘keep watch’ over the others and warn them if they think there’s danger.

Horses do sleep overnight standing up, they have special ligaments in their legs that hold them up while they sleep. Horses evolved to do this in the wild to let them quickly run away from a predator.

🐎 Visiting the horses at Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari? Make sure you keep them safe, and make sure you keep your dog safe.

Horses are big, strong animals – much bigger and stronger than your dog.

Please keep outside the fenced area and always keep your dog under effective control.

By following the on-site signage, visitors can safely enjoy visiting the horses at Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari, knowing that the horses are happy and comfortable too.

It’s been a huge day and a half of having the horses back home, and while it has been exciting for the horse owners, seeing your excitement and exclamations of “they’re back!!!” has been simply magical!!

After 4 years redevelopment horses finally return to West Beach - ABC listen In 2022, Lockleys Riding Club horses were forced to relocate as Breakout Creek was being redeveloped at West Beach where the River Torrens meets the sea. Now, they're back with Jack & Cashew moving in.
