It was a pleasure to present Learning Life Through Sport to the Senior School students and staff at Unity College today.

Over 150 students and staff came together to explore the importance of sportsmanship, respect and trying your hardest — and the role we all play in creating environments where everyone can thrive.

The students were incredibly engaged throughout the presentation and represented the College with outstanding behavior, polite manners and thoughtful comments as they departed. It was a wonderful reflection of the culture being built within the school community.

A huge thank you to Unity College for the opportunity and a special shout out to Alex, Travis and Scott for their commitment to developing young people and creating great environments where students can continue to grow and thrive. 👏

It was a pleasure to present Learning Life Through Sport to the West Gippsland Junior Football Competition last night.

There was genuine reflection and a real appetite to continue building environments where young people, coaches, parents, volunteers and umpires feel supported and valued.

Community sport has enormous power to shape lives when we approach it with open hearts, not clenched fists.

A huge thank you to Bobbie and Tim for their professionalism, leadership and commitment to creating positive environments in junior football where everyone can thrive.

You can enforce standards…or you can build ownership of them.

Because when people feel heard, valued and part of something bigger. They don’t just comply. They commit.

Empowerment doesn’t lower standards. It raises them, because they become their standards.

That’s where culture is built.
That’s where better humans are formed.

UMPIRE PILE-ON
Another round of AFL footy, another opportunity to pile on the umpires.

The pile-on crowd is out in force.

The narrative?

“The umpires are having a terrible year.”
Even dragging the ARC into it.
But the umpires aren’t the ARC.

This is what happens when criticism turns into a feeding frenzy — it gives everyone permission to join in.

Let’s be clear:

The game is imperfect.

The ARC is imperfect.

Players, coaches and umpires are imperfect.

Where humans and technology are involved, mistakes are inevitable.

Perfection doesn’t exist.

But the scrutiny?
Relentless. Personal. Excessive.

We dissect umpires like they’re never allowed to be human and get it wrong.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth — most people piling on wouldn’t last a day under that level of review in their own job.

If we keep normalising the pile-on, don’t be surprised when respect disappears from the game altogether.

Approach sport with open hearts, not clenched fists.

Mean Spirited Comments

On the eve of ANZAC Day, I came across comments on a post that really made me think.

One message: Leadership, communication, respect.

The response: ridicule, abuse, disrespect.

Young people are watching it all.

What are we teaching them?
