ARTIST NEWS
Sam Gold is currently showing in ‘Making Old New: DRG 10th Anniversary’, an exhibition at the David Roche Gallery.

This exhibition brings together works of art from DRG’s 18th to early 20th-century European and British collection with contemporary responses by 20 South Australian artists associated with the JamFactory. Featuring both established figures and more recent alumni, each artist has selected a piece from the collection as inspiration to create something entirely new. ‘Making Old New: DRG 10th Anniversary’ celebrates Adelaide’s vital role in shaping craft and design in Australia, and the enduring legacy of David Roche–whose passion for exceptional design and craftsmanship continues to inspire future generations.

About their work in this exhibition, which responds to a bronze sculpture of a pheasant poised for flight, Sam shares: “Rather than replicate the narrative of the bronze sculpture, I became interested in the choreography embedded within the form itself.” And that “The sculptural form I have produced sits within the suspended moment between lift and rest, where pattern becomes visible. Repeated elements extend outward, reflecting the span of wings while also evoking the material processes that underpin much of my practice – growth, accumulation and subtle transformation.”

‘Making Old New: DRG 10th Anniversary’ is on display at David Roche Gallery, North Adelaide, until 1st August 2026. Attendance is free.

Read the recent interview with Alfred Lowe in the latest issue of Art Guide Australia.

In this conversation Anna Carlsson asks: “How did your knowledge of the Central Desert impact your understanding of materials, markmaking and form?”, and Alfred shares: “I like to focus on landscape on an intimate level, getting in close to the details: the textures of the rocks, the small cracks and erosion, the imperfections that create something beautiful. The surface of my work is roughly textured and full of small cracks and rust patterns, but all of these imperfections are not flaws, they are beautiful.”

This interview can be read on the Art Guide website, link in bio.
Alfred Lowe’s solo exhibition ‘A GREAT AND WONDROUS SIGN’ continues at Hugo Michell Gallery until 20 June 2026.

David Booth [Ghostpatrol]’s ‘Rearranging the Universe’ is now showing at Hugo Michell Gallery.

Speaking on the development of this exhibition, David writes: “Last year I really leaned into building a library of stamps to create a set of artworks based on a few big play sessions over 12 months. The worlds are busy and carefully laid out, take a look around. Some images are clear and some are distorted. Some combine and reshape with others. I’m moving them around; they’re all getting rearranged.”

Read the reflection of Julia Robinson’s recent solo exhibition ‘The Felling Place’, written by Wendy Walker for Barefoot Review.

About this body of work, Walker writes: “Over the course of more than twenty years of her textile-based practice, she has developed a knack for tackling universal themes by burrowing into predominantly historical narratives that veer towards the macabre. “The best stories in life”, she has stated, “are about s*x, death and rebirth and for me this is why folklore always feels so relevant.”

David Booth [Ghostpatrol]’s ‘Rearranging the Universe’ is now showing at Hugo Michell Gallery.

“I’ve been building a new practice of play and experimentation in the studio; twisting the dials, changing the filters and volumes on different things, practicing turning away from ideas of scarcity and focusing on abundance. An abundance of ability to create and make anew, ‘Rearranging the Universe’ is one of the results of this.”

Read the recent InReview feature article on Alfred Lowe’s practice an exhibition ‘A GREAT AND WONDROUS SIGN’, currently showing at Hugo Michell Gallery.

Speaking about his work with Walter Marsh, Alfred shares: “It’s about this idea of looking to the future and looking for a sign, really,” he says of the exhibition’s title.

“You know, I’m lucky enough in life to be in a place where the future is really open to me now. It hasn’t always been that way in my life; I’ve spent most of it sort of just surviving, and so now I’m sort of in a better place.”

Alfred Lowe’s ‘A GREAT AND WONDROUS SIGN’ is showing until 20th June.
