🌟 Student Spotlight – Andy & Annette Baker 🌟
Some people become members of a dance studio.
Others become part of its history.
Andy and Annette Baker have been part of the QuickSteps story from the very beginning.
Their own dance journey started in the most unexpected way.
Just a few days before Andy's 50th birthday, he and Annette returned home from a wedding in Darwin when the telephone rang.
On the other end of the line was a dance studio.
"Hello, this is the Arthur Murray School of Dance. We'd like to offer you three free dance lessons."
Without a moment's hesitation, Andy replied:
"Yes!"
"When would you like to come in?"
"Now?"
And the rest...
..is history.
Like so many beginners, those first lessons weren't exactly graceful.
Andy laughs that he had "two left feet."
But something clicked.
Then came their very first showcase performance.
That was all it took.
Dancing wasn't just a hobby anymore.
It had become a passion.
Over the next twenty-three years, Andy and Annette immersed themselves in the wonderful world of ballroom dancing, learning from teachers across no fewer than seven dance studios throughout Adelaide. Along the way, many of those teachers became lifelong friends.
When Michelle opened QuickSteps on Pulteney Street, Andy and Annette were there from day one.
In fact, only a few weeks after the studio opened, the sound system suddenly failed.
Most people would have cancelled their lesson.
Andy did something different.
Within an hour, he had installed a replacement sound system...
..and then stayed for his dance lesson.
That moment perfectly sums up who Andy is.
Throughout the years, his generosity has become one of the quiet foundations of QuickSteps.
If the roof starts leaking...
Andy is there.
If the dance floor needs polishing...
Andy is there.
If something breaks...
Andy is there.
If something can be improved...
Andy is already thinking about how to fix it.
His incredible practical skills, generous spirit and willingness to help—always freely and without expecting anything in return—have made an immeasurable difference to our studio over the years.
Quite simply...
QuickSteps would not be the same without him.
And wherever Andy is, Annette is never far away.
She has supported him every step of the way and has become an equally valued member of the QuickSteps family. Whether helping behind the scenes, welcoming new faces or simply bringing her warmth and kindness to every Ball and social event, Annette helps create the friendly atmosphere that makes QuickSteps feel like home.
Together, they have become much more than students.
They have become friends.
Supporters.
Volunteers.
And an irreplaceable part of our community.
Today, after more than twenty-three years of dancing and over 90 showcase performances, Andy still describes the QuickSteps lifestyle as one of his greatest passions.
Not because of medals.
Not because of trophies.
But because dancing has given him friendships, purpose and a community that feels like family.
Andy and Annette remind us that the heart of a dance studio isn't only built on great teachers or beautiful dancing.
It's built by people who care.
People who quietly give their time.
People who help without being asked.
People who make everyone around them feel welcome.
Thank you, Andy and Annette, for everything you have done—and continue to do—for QuickSteps. Your kindness, generosity and friendship have helped shape this studio into the special place it is today.
We are incredibly lucky to have you both as part of our dance family. ❤️

🌟 Student Spotlight – Borgia Asirvadham 🌟
Some people dance because they are young.
Some people dance because they love it.
Borgia is one of those people.
Today, at the age of 70, she still lights up whenever she steps onto the dance floor.
For Borgia, dancing has never been about medals or perfection.
It's about joy.
Connection.
And making the most of every opportunity to dance.
Life, however, hasn't always made that easy.
Over the years, injuries slowed her down. For two years she lived in Sydney, away from the QuickSteps community. Later, she faced one of life's greatest heartbreaks with the passing of her husband.
Yet through every chapter, one thing never changed.
Her love for dancing.
Before discovering ballroom dancing, Borgia spent seven years as a church bell ringer. It was a role she loved, but years of ringing the heavy bells eventually injured her shoulder and brought that chapter of her life to an end.
Sometimes, when one door closes...
Another quietly opens.
Dance became that new beginning.
Like many social dancers, Borgia dreams of dancing with complete confidence.
She smiles as she admits that she isn't quite there yet.
But perhaps confidence isn't measured by perfect steps.
Perhaps it's measured by having the courage to keep dancing anyway.
One of the realities Borgia speaks about honestly is that, as we grow older, opportunities to dance become fewer.
That is one of the reasons QuickSteps means so much to her.
It is a place where everyone is welcomed.
Where friendships flourish.
Where laughter is shared.
And where age is never a barrier to enjoying music and movement.
"I enjoy coming to QuickSteps for the social side as much as the dancing," she says. "The teachers are so understanding, and I love the company."
Her words remind us of something important.
A dance studio is more than just a place to learn steps.
It is a community.
A place where people support one another through every stage of life.
At 70 years young, Borgia continues to prove that the joy of dancing doesn't fade with age.
If anything...
It becomes even more precious.
Thank you, Borgia, for reminding all of us that it is never too late to dance, never too late to learn, and never too late to find happiness on the dance floor. We are so grateful that you are part of the QuickSteps family. ❤️
