Labor's $2bil fantasy: Socialising autistic kids into thriving neurotypical adults 21/08/2025

My take on yesterday's announcements in a nutshell: The sustainability maths behind this foundational support fantasy just isn't adding up.

Labor's $2bil fantasy: Socialising autistic kids into thriving neurotypical adults I wrote most of this piece in early 2024, in reaction to rollout of the Inklings program. Because I know how getting “socialised” into meeting neurotypical standards - in schools, or otherwise - works out for autistic kids who grow up to be autistic adults like me and what it can mean for our ad...

Sign the Petition 29/09/2024

More than 8200 people have already signed Jenny Miller's petition to release the sealed Robodebt Royal Commission chapter.

I signed it for Jarrad Madgwick and Rhys Cauzzo, and for the pain Kath and Jenny live with every day. For everyone else harmed, whose lives were irreparably damaged.

For everyone else that could be harmed in future if history repeats itself in the absence of transparency and accountability over the most serious failings.

History must show the truth of what happened and who was responsible for the harms perpetrated on the people they victimised and treated like criminals for needing help.

You cannot change the culture that enabled Robodebt when the most important findings remain shrouded in secrecy.

❌ "This Bill was developed without true co-design, bypassing the voices of those most impacted." The Face-to-Face with Senators: Every Australian Counts Legislation Update Forum made it clear: the lack of genuine consultation and co-design is unacceptable. Policies that affect people with disabilities must be shaped by those with lived experience. Don’t forget, the deadline for feedback is now 25th August.

MEDIA STATEMENT: Rumours of back door deals to re-institutionalise people with disability, forcing individuals, parents and carers to give up their rights to choice and control over NDIS supports

FPDN joins calls from other advocates, including The National Network of Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls (The National Network), who have also expressed their deep concerns about the increasing institutionalisation of people with disability throughout the current NDIS reforms.

“First Nations people with disability, particularly our women sit at the intersection of multiple discriminatory policies, laws and agendas. We are bearing the brunt of a number of sweeping changes that are being implemented at odds with the government’s commitments under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Enough is enough, we will not sit idly by while our communities have our rights violated”, says Woppaburra women and FPDN Head of Policy, Tahlia-Rose Vanissum.

🚨 Content Warning 🚨 🍻 Pub Testing the NDIS Bill: Does the Government’s commitment to duty of care pass the test?

⚠️ Content Warning: ⚠️ This video discusses scenarios potentially leading to the preventable deaths of people with disabilities, including by su***de. Viewer discretion is advised. The Government is encouraged to respond meaningfully to our concerns.

This unscripted discussion addresses some of the things keeping disability advocates Uli Cartwright and Cat Walker up at night, and some of the concerns we covered in our submissions to the two Senate inquiries on the NDIS Bill which have not yet been addressed at the time of publication.

Forgive the lack of introduction... It had been a long day. We start from a discussion of the difficulty government officials seem to have understanding that debts against NDIS participants cannot exist unless somebody makes a judgement that they have misspent their funds.

Participants and their families will understand how subjective that is, but do the general public? Does the Government?

We hope NDIS Minister Bill Shorten is listening. We hope the wider community is, too.
