Born to Build - Helping you build your career journey in the building and construction industry

18/06/2026

PEER Apprentice, Isabella LaVista, is currently undertaking her 4th year electrical apprenticeship with host employers Elech Mech Services and has been collecting accolades along the way.

Isabella was the recipient of not one, but two category wins in the HiViZ Women’s Excellence Awards in 2025 - Tradeswoman of the Year and Rising Star. Isabella shared her thoughts following her win;

”I want to get the message out that girls can not only do a trade but also thrive in a trade. I want to make a difference so we can achieve the norm of ‘people in trade’ instead of ‘women in trade’.”

Isabella’s achievements are a testament to her talent and dedication, and she wants to encourage other young people to consider taking up a trade;

“I chose to do an electrical apprenticeship because I knew I’d thrive in a hands-on workplace, having struggled to pay attention and sit still in school. I’d recommend a trade career to anyone who may feel the same as I did towards school or a desk job - an apprenticeship is a great way to kickstart your career and earn while you learn!”

Our Born to Build team went on a Regional Career Roadshow over the past two weeks, visiting Kadina, Port Pirie and Port Lincoln.

Over 1,500 students from Orrorroo, to Coffin Bay visited the Born to Build stall to talk about an apprenticeship and careers in the building and construction industry.

The need for regional housing is accelerating, with more than 26,000 new homes required across regional SA (including the Limestone Coast, Murray Mallee, and Yorke Peninsula) over the next 25 years. That's why roadshows like this, that introduce young people and locals to a career in the trades are so important to the future of our developing regional areas.

There has never been a better time to get into an apprenticeship, whether you're in the metro or regionals!

Inspiring future builders in Port Lincoln!
The team recently headed to the Eyre Peninsula for the Port Lincoln regional career expo. With over 500 students in attendance, it was a fantastic opportunity for them to connect with local youth and showcase the diverse career pathways available within the building and construction industry.

To give students a true feel for the trades, the team brought along interactive, hands-on activities, allowing the students to immerse themselves and gain firsthand knowledge of the industry.

As Employer Partner for the Building and Construction pathway, Born to Build is proud to partner with Technical Colleges and Bloom Leadership to deliver a four-part leadership workshop series for students at Tonsley.

The first session encouraged students to explore different leadership approaches, reflect on their own strengths, and consider the important role leadership plays both on-site and throughout life.

Tom Jonas is excited about the collaboration “…bringing industry leaders into schools reinforces an important message for students: leadership is not just a school concept, but a critical skill for success in business, employment, and entrepreneurship.”

Benjamin Dening, Industry Program Lead - Building & Construction at Tonsley Tech College said “The Bloom Leadership session was a great entry point to build discussion with our students and helping them understand how they are led by those around them and how we all have leadership opportunities every day. The accessibility of the content was a big positive from my end, as students were using it in our discussions later in the day."

The Born to Build team are thrilled the first session has been so well received!
