The tragedy in Ggaba, Kampala was everywhere in the news this week. Yesterday, four toddlers were brutally murdered at a daycare center in Kampala, shaking families, caregivers, and communities across Uganda.
We are deeply saddened by what happened in Ggaba.
A place that should have offered safety, care, and protection became the site of unimaginable violence. Our thoughts are with the children, their families, the caregivers, and everyone carrying this grief.
Moments like this remind us that education is not only about access. It is also about safety. It is also about trust. And it is also about the responsibility to create spaces where children are truly protected.
In development work, we often speak about classrooms, school materials, enrolment, and opportunity. All of that matters. But none of it matters enough if children are not safe.
Child protection is not a side issue. It is not something to think about later. It must be part of how we build, support, and strengthen every space for children.
Children need more than access.
They need safety.
They need protection.
They need adults and systems worthy of their trust.
Education begins where a child is safe.

First day back.New year, same school, very familiar energy.
Music playing somewhere in the background, kids dancing without caring who’s watching, sticky fingers from cake and sweets, games that get louder by the minute, snacks shared, toys passed around, laughter everywhere. This is how the academic year 2026 started at Bbanga Kindergarten and Primary School.
This opening day happened because Hannah decided it should. Thank you for making it feel less like a “school start” and more like a proper welcome.
We are always open to creating moments like this. If you want to support a school day, a celebration, an excursion or something simple that makes children feel seen, write to us here on Instagram. We’ll figure it out together.
A short message from Filidaus ❤️

Thanks to the support of the Yvonne und Peter Imholz Stiftung / Yvonne and Peter Imholz Foundation, we are able to provide children with life-saving swimming lessons.
On the 84 Ssese Islands, boats are part of everyday life for many families, yet many children and adults cannot swim.
Learning to swim saves lives, and this support makes that possible.
Filidaus is one of the children you met in the recent ARTE documentary.
This reel shows us visiting him and his family on Bunyama Island, a place we have been connected to for many years.
Since the documentary aired, many new people have found their way here and asked how they can help. We truly love that question. There is no fixed model, because support can look very different. Some people choose recurring donations, others prefer a one-time contribution, small or large. What matters most to us is dialogue. If you write to us, we sit down together, look at the situation, and shape meaningful support for Filidaus’ family together with you.
Our work has been rooted on this island for a long time, especially in fishing villages. Life here is demanding. Families depend on daily catches, weather conditions, and unstable incomes. Access to education, healthcare, and basic security is limited, yet resilience and warmth are everywhere. These communities carry a lot, quietly.
We have been on the ground for 13 years. Relationships, trust, and continuity are at the heart of everything we do. We walk alongside families, not for a moment, but for the long run.
If you feel moved, you are not alone. Together, we can turn care into real, lasting support. Send us a DM and let’s figure out the best way to help together 💛

Welcome, and thank you for being here 🤗 Many of you found us through our recent ARTE documentary, and we are truly grateful for the interest, messages and kind words we have received.
We work with island communities on Lake Victoria (locally known as Lake Nalubaale), where daily life is shaped by water, distance and resilience. Together with local teams, we run long term projects in education, women’s empowerment and climate, always in close cooperation with the communities we work with.
This carousel offers a very short glimpse into our work and the reality behind the film.

May this Christmas bring quiet moments of gratitude, and the New Year fresh courage for everything ahead ❤️
Wow 🤩 Our documentary is finally out and we are incredibly excited to share it. As part of the well known documentary series “Most Dangerous Ways to School”, this episode sheds light on the daily reality of children of the Ssese Islands whose access to education is defined by long distances, unsafe routes and exhausting commutes.
Together with filmmaker and her dedicated team, we followed Filidaus and Daphne on their challenging way to school and back home. What appears to be a normal school day quickly becomes a powerful story of resilience, determination and the many barriers children on the islands face simply to attend class.
This is exactly where Bbanga school comes in as a concrete and long term solution for the 84 Ssese Islands. The school was created with a clear focus on children from remote areas and neighbouring islands, where daily commuting by boat or on foot is unsafe, unreliable or simply impossible. With on site dormitories, children no longer have to make these dangerous journeys every day. Instead, they can live at school, learn in a safe environment and focus fully on their education.
The documentary not only shows the problem, it helps underline why boarding schools like Bbanga school are essential in regions like this. They reduce risk, increase attendance and give children a real chance at consistent learning and a stable routine.
The documentary is currently available in Africa and will be released in Europe very soon: tinyurl.com/ssesedoc
A foggy December evening in Vienna, warm hands around Glühwein, music in the air and so many familiar and new faces coming together.
Our last gathering of the year felt like a quiet celebration of everything that happened over the past months, the work, the challenges, the small and big steps forward.
With Bbanga Beats playing, conversations flowing and the city wrapped in winter mist, we paused for a moment to look back and say thank you. Thank you for showing up, for believing in what we do, for contributing in so many different ways.
This evening brought us closer to our goal of fully funding the next classroom block. Closer to more space for learning, growth and future opportunities. We ended the year together, grateful, encouraged and ready for what comes next.
Thank you for being part of this journey 🤍
Special Thanks to Andreas Leitgeb, Jakob Käferböck and all our dear volunteers who showed again teamwork can accomplish.

Our founder Sani on his way to our women’s hub Bakyala Tukole in a fishing village on the Ssese Islands, Uganda.
The walk became one of those small moments that stay with you, the kind where children run over with a warmth that makes the rest of the world fall quiet for a minute.
Their smiles, their curiosity, the way they reach out for just a moment, all of it reminds us why we keep showing up.
Life on the islands is full of beauty and hardship side by side, and every bit of support makes a real difference. It helps a child grow with confidence, helps a mother breathe a little easier, helps a community move forward one step at a time.
Thank you for walking this path with us, especially now during Christmas season, when your kindness becomes a light for families who have so little.
