OUT NOW: Four wonderful screen prints by GHADA AMER
The screen prints were created as part of the raising flags project by museum in progress. Each screen print combines a striking statement with a deliberate chromatic scheme:
NO EMPIRE LASTS FOREVER – quotes Krishna Udayasankar, echoing the US flag
EVERY NATION THAT SLEEPS IN FREEDOM WILL WAKE UP IN SLAVERY – referencing the work of French philosopher Alain (Émile-Auguste Chartier), inspired by the colours of the EU flag
WE WILL NOT BE SILENT – in Arabic, anonymous, drawing on the symbolism of the Palestinian flag
YOUR IGNORANCE IS THEIR POWER – anonymous, referencing the colours of the Burkina Faso flag
Through her poetic-political gestures, Amer’s screen prints become a sign of resistance and visibility – beyond inherited meanings, towards a transgressive and transcultural emblem.

For raising flags, Andreas Fogarasi created four flags titled Branding the Public (Austria), each featuring a well-known Austrian visual symbol. The selected signs represent the visual identity of state and stateaffiliated institutions during the respective period and are deeply embedded in the collective memory:
AUA (1972–2003)
ORF (1968–2002)
ÖBB (1974–2004)
Made in Austria (1978–2004)
In memoriam Arnulf Rainer (1929-2025).

museum in progress and the Vienna State Opera announce that the 2026/27 “Safety Curtain” will be realised posthumously with a work by the artist.
The 29th contribution to the “Safety Curtain” series, conceived by museum in progress (mip.at) and realised since 1998 in cooperation with the Vienna State Opera and the Bundestheater-Holding, will be presented in the Vienna State Opera in autumn 2026 and will be on view for approximately nine months.
Herbert Brandl had already received the commission a year ago, was delighted by the invitation from museum in progress, and had begun working on his design. The artist was selected by the internationally composed jury – Daniel Birnbaum, Bice Curiger, and Hans-Ulrich Obrist. After the artist’s sudden passing, the jury, in agreement with museum in progress and the Vienna State Opera, chose to maintain their decision.

Ghada Amer's amazing flags on the Stubenbrücke in Vienna!
For the project raising flags by museum in progress, Ghada Amer created four flags that inscribe pointed political messages into the public space of Vienna. Each flag combines a striking statement with a deliberate chromatic scheme:
NO EMPIRE LASTS FOREVER – quotes Krishna Udayasankar, echoing the US flag
WE WILL NOT BE SILENT – in Arabic, anonymous, drawing on the symbolism of the Palestinian flag
EVERY NATION THAT SLEEPS IN FREEDOM WILL WAKE UP IN SLAVERY – referencing the work of French philosopher Alain (Émile-Auguste Chartier), inspired by the colours of the EU flag
YOUR IGNORANCE IS THEIR POWER – anonymous, referencing the colours of the Burkina Faso flag
Through her poetic and political gestures, Amer reclaims the national flag as a site of resistance and visibility – shifting it away from its conventional function and reimagining it as a transgressive, transcultural, and feminist emblem. By situating her interventions within the urban landscape, on the Stubenbrücke, Amer opens a mindspace for transnational reflection and collective consciousness.
