Microbial Oceanography
A research group based in Vienna that focuses on studying metabolisms of prokaryotes and the interactions with the surrounding Ocean.
Our main focus is the microbial oceanography of the deep ocean where the prokaryotic activity is relatively low compared to the euphotic zone. The deep ocean comprises about 70% of the total ocean volume and hence deep-water microbes mediate a substantial fraction of the biogeochemical cycles with thus far unknown metabolic pathways. We develop and improve available methods in molecular biology an

Valerie is an Environmental Microbial Bioinformatician whose research focuses on the evolution of microbial metabolism in extreme environments. By bridging fieldwork, experimental microbiology and computational modeling, her work reveals how microorganisms influence and respond to environmental changes across ecological and evolutionary scales.
Valerie is a strong advocate of equity and inclusion in science, drawing from her own experience as an underrepresented scientist.
