Building an international network to remove barriers to sport for refugees, migrants, and marginalised groups.

Yet refugees, migrants, and ethnic minorities, especially women and girls, still face real barriers to participating in sport and physical activity. These barriers can be even greater when combined with discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, or social status.

We connect grassroots organisations, minority initiatives, and self-organised groups with sport clubs, associations, NGOs, and public institutions, creating opportunities to learn, collaborate, and make sport more inclusive.

We put grassroots initiatives and minority-led organisations first. Because lasting change happens when communities are not only included, but empowered to lead it themselves.

We believe the strength of a network lies in the diversity of its members. That's why we bring organisations together across Europe and the Global South to work for social inclusion in and through sport.

In 2010, ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ง NGOs and sport organisations from across Europe launched the first SPIN project to tackle the underrepresentation of migrants, ethnic minorities, and asylum seekers in mainstream sport. What started as a project grew into an informal network behind a series of initiatives, including ESPIN, Sport Welcomes Refugees, SPIN Women, SPIN Refugees, and SPIN Youth. In 2023, we took the next step: opening the network to organisations across Europe and the Global South, and formally establishing SPIN as an international non profit under Austrian law. Today, we're growing that network further and inviting more organisations to join us.

Back in April, we came together in Lisbon for the closing conference of the SPIN Youth project.

After two and a half years of exploring youth participation, inclusion and the barriers young people can face in sport, the conference was a moment to reflect on the journey, share experiences and look ahead.

The project may be completed, but the ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ it started continue.

Because meaningful youth participation is not just about giving young people a place in sport. It is about making space for their voices, ideas and decisions.

Swipe through for a few moments from Lisbon and a look back at the SPIN Youth journey.

The project ended. The work continues.

Youth participation means creating real opportunities for young people to influence how sport is organised, developed and experienced.

It means moving from doing things ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ young people to doing things ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก them and creating space for them to shape, organise and make decisions.

Because meaningful participation is ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐š ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž activity. It is a way of working that requires commitment, trust and space for young voices.

For SPIN, inclusion through sport means ๐œ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ž๐ฌ where people can participate, connect and feel that they belong.

We believe ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ ๐œ๐š๐ง bring different people and communities together, create opportunities and build stronger, more inclusive societies.

Thatโ€™s what weโ€™re here for.

For 18 months, SPIN worked together with partners in the Sahrawi refugee camps near Tindouf, Algeria, to make sport and physical education more inclusive for children and young people.

From a 5 day multiplier training near Tindouf to local trainings across all five camps, more than 70 trainers and teachers took part in learning and putting inclusive methods into practice.

Along the way, we:

โ–ซ๏ธTrained educators in inclusive sport methods
โ–ซ๏ธDelivered local trainings across all 5๏ธโƒฃ camps
โ–ซ๏ธInvolved hundreds of children and young people in sport based activities
โ–ซ๏ธProvided new and age appropriate sports equipment
โ–ซ๏ธDeveloped a training manual in English and Arabic

For SPIN, this project was also a first in two important ways.

๐Ÿฅ‡ Our first time working directly in a refugee camp context.
๐Ÿฅ‡ Our first project as a registered organisation on the African continent.

Most importantly, this journey was about people. About sharing knowledge, building trust and discovering how sport can create connection, belonging and community even in challenging contexts.

The project has now come to a close.
But the partnership isnโ€™t. ๐Ÿค

A heartfelt thank you to our partners, trainers, teachers and everyone who helped make this journey possible. โค๏ธ
