AI has arrived in clinical practice offering new opportunities to enhance radiation protection of patients. However, clear accountability for patient safety in diagnosis and treatment remains the responsibility of healthcare professionals. This was agreed by over 187 medical experts, decision makers and AI specialists from 65 countries and 18 organizations at a recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meeting in Vienna.

“This meeting has allowed us to distil the current status of AI, find what we need, what is missing and how to move forward in applying it to further strengthen patient radiation protection,” said Chair Stine Korreman, Professor of Medical Physics at Aarhus University, Denmark.

Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work .

This year, the International Labour Organization highlights the importance of a healthy psychosocial working environment. The IAEA supports this by helping countries strengthen their safety culture for radiation protection. This is particularly important in areas such as healthcare, where clear roles, open communication, and a respectful, well-functioning workplace support safer patient care.
