Marseille Beach Rugby Opens EBRA Series with a Vision for Growth and Professionalisation of the Sport
As the Marseille Beach Rugby (20-21/6/26) opens a new chapter as part of the EBRA Series, expectations are high for an edition that brings together youth and senior competition in a renewed organizational framework. We spoke with Lionel Laugier, one of the organisers, to understand the vision behind the event, the future of the tournament, and the evolution of beach rugby as a growing discipline in Europe.
* **How do you see this edition of the Marseille Beach Rugby?**
It is the first stop of the EBRA Series and we are ready to welcome the youth starting from Wednesday, followed by the senior categories. This edition represents a phase of renewal, supported by a strong organisational effort.
* **What are your expectations and how far would you like to grow your tournament?**
We have planned two days dedicated to youth rugby, on Wednesday and Sunday. We will try to build a tournament that can grow around the future EBRA Youth Series.
* **In your opinion, what makes beach rugby so dynamic and exciting?**
It is an extraordinary sporting experience: fast-paced and stripped of traditional set-piece constraints (no scrums, no lineouts, no mauls…). It is a game based on ball movement, evasion, and attractive tackling. The two-second rule is essential to preserve the original spirit of the discipline, inspired also by the experience of our Italian friends who helped found this sport.
* **What would it take for this discipline to take a definitive step forward?**
A European Nations Championship already exists with Rugby Europe, and on our side we created EBRA in 2012, which operates independently as a semi-professional organisation. It has done a great deal to structure the sport around respect for the rules by players and referees, supported by an experienced refereeing group. What is now needed is to secure financial resources to take the next step and stabilise the organisation towards a sustainable level of professionalism. The mutual support within EBRA is a great success, and this spirit must continue over time to increase the sport’s attractiveness, including through new media channels.

With more than 800 athletes, over 110 matches and teams arriving from across Europe, Porto Beach Rugby 2026 is set to be one of the highlights of the international beach rugby calendar.
Taking place on June 20-21 at the International Beach Stadium in Porto, the event continues its impressive growth, combining elite competition, youth development and the unique atmosphere that only beach rugby can offer.
We spoke with Nuno Gramaxo, organizer of Porto Beach Rugby, about the tournament's ambitions, its growing role within the European circuit, and his vision for the future of beach rugby.
How do you see this edition of Porto Beach Rugby?
This edition of Porto Beach Rugby represents a very important step in establishing the event at a national and international level. In addition to being part of the 2nd stage of the National Beach Rugby Circuit, it will also be the 1st joint stage of the European Beach Rugby Circuit, which reinforces the importance of the competition and its ability to attract teams from various countries. On June 20th and 21st, the International Beach Stadium will host more than 110 games and 800 athletes. The 20th will be dedicated to senior men's and women's competitions, with the participation of 12 men's teams and 6 women's teams in the European tournament, while the 21st will be dedicated to youth categories, from the Mini-Champions to the Youth European Cup for Under-14 and Under-16. It is an event that brings together high-level competition, training, camaraderie and promotion of the sport in a unique seaside environment.
What are your expectations and how far would you like to take the tournament?
Expectations are very positive. We want to provide an excellent experience for athletes, coaches, partners, and the public, consolidating Porto Beach Rugby as one of the main events of the sport in Europe. Our ambition is to continue growing in organizational quality, international renown, and the ability to attract leading teams. We would like to see Porto Beach Rugby become a mandatory stop on the European circuit, simultaneously contributing to the promotion of the city of Porto as a top tourist and sporting destination.
What do you think makes beach rugby in general so vibrant and exciting?
Beach rugby manages to bring together the best of rugby in a faster, more dynamic format that is closer to the public. The games are intense, with a lot of action, many tries, and constant changes of pace, which makes each match extremely exciting.
At the same time, the beach environment creates a very special, relaxed, and festive atmosphere, bringing athletes and spectators closer together. This combination of high-level competition and a spirit of celebration is one of the sport's great strengths.
What would be necessary for this sport to take the definitive leap?
Beach rugby has enormous growth potential. To make the definitive leap, it will be important to increase media visibility, strengthen national and international circuits, attract more sponsors, and create more competitive opportunities for athletes of all ages.
The focus on training is equally fundamental. Events like Porto Beach Rugby, which bring together senior international competitions and hundreds of young athletes in a single weekend, demonstrate the path the sport should follow. With continuity, investment, and proper promotion, I believe that beach rugby can gain an increasingly relevant space in the European sports scene.

Vienna Beach Rugby: Where Sand, Sun and Rugby Meet in the Heart of Europe
Set against the unique backdrop of the Danube and the vibrant summer atmosphere of Vienna, the first edition of Vienna Beach Rugby aims to be much more than just another tournament. With ambitions to become a key stop in the EBRA circuit, the event combines sporting quality, entertainment and the true spirit of rugby in an iconic location. From creating a “rugby fest” for teams and fans to increasing the visibility of beach rugby across Europe, the organizers are looking to build a long-term project capable of growing both the event and the discipline itself. Here is their vision for the future of Vienna Beach Rugby.
* How do you see the first edition of Beach Rugby in Wien?
Our tournament is in its first year and we see it as an exciting starting point. Our goal is to create a top-quality tournament where teams can enjoy both the competition and the unique setting. We want players to experience great rugby while also making the most of Vienna and the Danube during the summer.
At the same time, we aim to introduce beach rugby to a wider local audience and give people in Vienna the opportunity to discover the sport and enjoy a great show.
Above all, we aim for it to be a "rugby fest" that makes teams and spectators look forward to coming back next year.
* What are your expectations, and how far would you like to take your tournament?
Our ambition is to make Vienna Beach Rugby a must-attend event in the years to come. In the long term, we aim to build a tournament that combines sporting quality with a unique overall experience for both players and spectators. We also hope to contribute to the continued growth of the EBRA series by establishing a strong and attractive stop on the circuit.
* What do you think makes beach rugby in general so vibrant and exciting?
Beach rugby is all about fun, connection and performance.
For the players, it’s the joy of playing the sport we love in a unique environment: on the sand, with friends, under the sun. Relaxed yet competitive.
For the audience, it’s a real show: fast-paced games, spectacular plays and a special atmosphere that combines the true rugby spirit with a summer vibe..
* What would be needed for this discipline to make the final leap?
Definitely more visibility! Beach rugby has huge potential, but many people are still discovering it for the first time and they immediately love it.
Continuing to develop high-quality tournaments in attractive locations across Europe, within the EBRA series, will play a crucial role in growing the sport.
This is also what motivated us to create Vienna Beach Rugby: to contribute to give beach rugby the visibility it deserves in an idyllic location and make it more accessible.
