164 UN member states have backed a resolution encouraging maps that show the relative sizes of continents more accurately.

Why does it matter? The familiar Mercator projection makes areas near the poles look disproportionately large. Greenland can appear comparable to Africa, even though Africa is around 14 times larger.

Equal Earth preserves relative areas, giving us a clearer picture of how much space continents actually occupy. It still distorts shapes and distances — no flat map can preserve everything.
