PARALLEL VIENNA presents young and emerging as well as established artistic practices and brings together art initiatives of every kind – art associations, galleries, project spaces, off spaces and artist spaces – , both Austrian and international, all under one roof. It thus combines local artistic creation with international trends and contributes to building networks and fosters exchanges between artists, curators, collectors and exhibition visitors. PARALLEL VIENNA is a hybrid between art fair, exhibition platform and artist studio. It unites exhibitions made by commercial galleries (GALLERY STATEMENTS — each with a solo presentation of an artist), off-spaces and art associations (PROJECT STATEMENTS – a solo or group show) and solo presentations by selected artists (ARTIST STATEMENTS or artistic INTERVENTIONS in the building invited directly by PARALLEL VIENNA). Instead of the usual booths at art fairs, each exhibitor occupies a separate room of the building in which the exhibition is presented. These site-specific artworks and interventions are the trademark of PARALLEL VIENNA and make the fair a unique and alternative exhibition format outside the“white cube. As a curated art fair participation is upon invitation by the curatorial team only.

Vienna based artist Sebastian Kelemer - part of this year’s ARTIST STATEMENTS - was invited by Ludwig Reiter to collaborate in support of Doctors Without Borders .
Using cross and long stitch embroidery the artist transformed Ludwig Reiter’s icionc „Tool Bag“ into a one-of-a-kind leather object.

Last night at MQ the Talent Scholarship for Visual Arts was awarded. Congratulations to Ruth Größwang and Clemens Gächter!
Clemens Gächter received the Audience Prize and will present an ARTIST STATEMENT at the upcoming PARALLEL Vienna. His new works will be featured in a solo presentation from 16–20 September 2026.
Ruth Größwang was awarded the €10,000 scholarship, supported by Wiener Städtische Versicherungsverein.
The exhibition »Tender Matters«, featuring works by all five nominees, is on view in the Ovalhalle through 17 December, with free admission.

Tobias Pils, 1971 in Linz geboren, zählt zu den spannendsten malerischen Positionen der Gegenwart. Unter Verwendung einer stark reduzierten Farbpalette schafft er Gemälde und Zeichnungen, die abstrakte und gegenständliche Momente zu assoziativen Bildwelten verweben. Was sich auf motivischer Ebene als eine Auseinandersetzung mit ebenso elementaren wie persönlichen Themen wie Geburt und Tod, Werden und Vergehen lesen lässt, verhandelt zugleich zentrale Fragen der Malerei: In Pils’ Bilderkosmos führt eine malerische Markierung zur nächsten, ein Bild zu einem weiteren, so als würde auch die Malerei unausgesetzt ihren Tod und ihre Wiedergeburt inszenieren.
Tobias Pils lebt und arbeitet in Wien.

Born in Linz in 1971, Tobias Pils is among the most exciting painters working today. Employing a heavily reduced color palette, he creates paintings and drawings that weave abstract and representational elements into associative pictorial worlds. What in terms of subject matter can be interpreted as an investigation of both elementary and personal themes like birth and death or becoming and passing, also negotiates central questions in painting at large. For in Pils’ visual cosmos, one painterly mark leads to the next, one image to another, as if painting were constantly staging its own death and rebirth.
Tobias Pils lives and works in Vienna.

Our Story
PARALLEL VIENNA takes place for the eighth time in Vienna from 22th to 27th September 2020 and sticks to its approach of using temporarily vacant buildings as a presentation platform for contemporary art. This year PARALLEL VIENNA takes place at Altes Gewerbehaus at Rudolf-Sallinger-Platz 1, 1030 Vienna.
