goodbye ostblok, hello: Kacerovsky

In 2010, we founded ostblok. The three of us were teenagers, Tamás Kiss parents came from Hungary, Patryk Seni Senwicki from Poland, and we chose the name because we were young, dumb, and made small movies with barely any money.

16 years later authoritarianism is spreading again across the former Eastern bloc since Russia launched it’s brutal invasion of Ukraine. The name hasn’t felt funny or ironic for some time. Especially now that Tamás and Patryk are both pursuing new paths. As a second-generation Viennese, it has little connection to my own identity. So today I am changing the company name to »Kacerovsky«.

It’s my grandmother’s maiden name. A Sudeten German, she was born in Czechoslovakia and forced to leave after the Second World War. But rumor has it the name might actually have polish origins.

And as the story goes, my grandmother arrived in Vienna on an empty cattle wagon. So I get to keep the beautiful logo by Laura Edelbacher. The new logotype is from fantastic Anna Nagy, based on Playground by Pangram Pangram Foundry.

Kacerovsky will continue to be a nod to an Eastern European heritage. But in a quieter, more personal way that will hopefully age better over time.
