Early summer is the ideal time to plant containers, such as patio pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. With thirty degree heat upon us and hot sea breezes you can safely put containers outside, but you should invest in self watering pots. If you don't, when planters are set outside in the sun and wind, you may have to water them several times a day just to keep the plants alive. However, by using self-watering pots, you can grow lush, vibrant plants with a lot less watering. Don’t forget to feed container-bound plants as the summer progresses. Are you struggling with Aphids? Of course we can try to control them with a strong blast of water from the hose or be tough on them with a blast of insecticidal soap. Here's a simple approach - wrap a wide strip of tape around your hand, sticky side out, and pat the leaves of plants infested with aphids. Concentrate on the undersides of leaves, because that's where they like to hide.

Don't let your topiary trees be burnt by the summer sun. Trimming box topiary involves cutting back the fresh new growth of your chosen plant in late spring, to encourage the development of side shoots. These shoots can then be cut in mid summer to create a well-defined surface in the shape of your choice. Sideshoots will then grow again and the plants can be given a final shaping and tidy up if necessary in early autumn. But remember the water, topiary plants get burnt in the sun.
