What's the biggest advantage of a professional studio?

One of the many advantages is the optimal listening environment a studio provides. When you're recording and mixing music at home, like so many indie artists nowadays, your ears run the risk of having certain biases because of the restricted listening environment. This may cause your music not to translate well onto different speakers or headphones.

During the production process of a song, I utilise multiple different speakers and headphones to get an accurate picture of what the finished product will sound like on different systems. Getting something to sound great on your speakers is easy, but getting it to sound great on all speakers and systems is a massive challenge!

The Pultec EQP-1A is one of the classic EQs used mainly in mixing and can probably be found in multiple effects chains in professional mixes. It brings a distinct coloration to the signal which makes it not really suitable for mastering applications. Using it's musical sound properly though can bring warmth to pretty much any instrument or vocal.

I use the Acustica Titanium 3 plugins (which have sampled real analog gear) to bring tightness and warmth to my kick drums and bass lines, utilising the PULTEC-Trick.
