"How to transform spatial void into experiential space?"
This was the central question guiding our project.
The book “Mieders Orte” is now complete.
And so are their Bachelor’s studies.
The question continues to resonate.
Navigating a wide range of design-relevant parameters – social, political, functional, and technical – 14 students from Hashtag , the Lightweight Structures Unit at the University of Innsbruck set out to rethink a village square as a multifunctional public space.
Through precise and sensitive interventions, they engaged deeply with the site and translated their responses into spatial form – allowing the place itself to speak.
The book “Mieders Orte” is out now and available via .
It was a great pleasure to accompany this group on their journey, under the lead of Benedict Esche. Thanks to the students for their endurance and passion, and to Giacomo Nüsslein for the meaningful comments.

We are pleased to share the successful assembly and installation of the "Twisted Clouds".
This large-scale prototype combines asymptotic and geodesic patterns through twisted plywood strips. The project is based on the exceptional PhD research of Mohammad Saleh Tabari and Fereshteh Kh , conducted under the supervision of Prof. Günther H. Filz at LSU, the Lightweight Structures Unit, Faculty of Architecture, University of Innsbruck.

In addition to its expressive geometry, "Twisted Clouds" represents a special architectural application of a 6-6 Stewart-Gough Platform, usually known from flight simulators. Here 3 legs are on each side of the platform, in this case, the “Twisted Cloud”, plus all six legs are in tension. To our knowledge, this is the first time such a configuration has been explored in an architectural context.

I am thrilled to share our recent publication, a collaborative effort with esteemed colleagues Vincent Kuo, Ph.D. and Jussi Leveinen. As an architect, I am pleasantly surprised to have the opportunity to contribute to this unusual field and topic, where the interplay between various disciplines often presents challenges.
Under the lead of Vincent Kuo, we have harnessed the power of Artificial Intelligence through a natural language processing technique known as Latent Semantic Analysis.
What's remarkable is the consistent underestimation of this methodology. Our research demonstrates its capacity to identify domain-specific semantic connections using unstructured text data. The implications are profound, offering a transformative means of connecting competences across disciplines. Proposed method could open many doors to improved structures, processes and architectural spaces.

Every year, we are luckily surprised by our students from the Design of Structures course. Here are some of the projects that they explored, analyzed, digitally remodeled and built as scaled model with high degree of detail.

The XI edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures (STRUCTURAL MEMBRANES 2023) was held on 02-04 October 2023 in beautiful Valencia, again collecting and disseminating state-of-the-art research and technology for design, analysis, construction and maintenance of textile and inflatable structures.
Together with Prof. Josep Ignasi de LLORENS DURAN (UPC, School of Architecture, Barcelona, Spain) I had the pleasure to chair the invited session IS02 Detailing – Case Studies – Installation Process. What an excellent line up of topics, viewpoints and personalities in this field - spanning from the "Adoration of the Joint" to "Santiago Bernabéu Stadium" and from "Seismic Loading" to "Pneumatics" and "Archeological Site Protection Structures".
Warm thanks to the authors and the speakers; Nic Goldsmith FAIA LEED AP, Bernd Stimpfle, Aleksandar Vucur, Ruy Pauletti, Ramirez Lares, Katja Bernert, Thomas Hermeking, and Fevzi Dansik.
See you again,
latest in STRUCTURAL MEMBRANES 2025!
