Our Collection of Zines and Artist Books

Michael Yeghyan: Beirut (_17_18)

“The book essentially documents my two trips to Beirut, Lebanon in August 2017 and January 2018. Beirut is a city that's given me many interesting faces and places to photograph, and will forever hold a special place in my heart as the locale where l've grown as a person and as a photographer. There is no specific agenda that this book follows, make of it what you will. I hope in these moments you will find some inspiration, as I did when I was capturing them.”

We’re happy to have your zines and artist books in our collection and MAGAZIN for sale.

Book’s Day: Typology and Difference

February 4-11

Typology is a certain artistic project thinking, where the main tool for the photographer is the repetition or variation of certain similar visual structures and objects in a series of images. Typology is carried out in a variety of samples, where each subsequent photograph is a kind of ‘analogy’ of the previous one. Typological photographs definitely routinize the viewer's gaze, which can cause the viewer to experience a certain fatigue as the receptors of perception are saturated with the intensity of the repetition of simulacrums. In this regard, for fruitful contemplation, the viewer needs to make a pause and to differentiate. The significance of typologized projects is learned precisely through differentiation, not analogization, since the value of the unique identity of each photograph is formed in its difference, which is the basis of repetition, where there is no place for concepts like “original and copy” or “beginning, middle and end”.

Dear friends, we invite you to hang out at our Book’s Day about Typology and Differentiation.

Photographer of the week: Helga Paris

“I've always been drawn to the everyday, the unspectacular. But I didn't photograph it clinically, aseptically; rather, I tried to reproduce it as realistically and as hauntingly as possible.”

A new book in the Library!

“Inventing Japan is just another way of getting to know it . . . Trust appearances, consciously confuse the decor with the drama, never worry about understanding, just be there—dasein—and everything will come your way. Well, something, at least . . .”

Chris Marker’s 1982 photo-essay Le Dépays is a present from lovely Sona Karapoghosyan! Thank you, Sona, for your refined cinefile taste!

Book’s Day: Surrealism and Photography
(January 21-28)

Susan Sontag, in her key book “On Photography”, defines the nature of photography as surreal: “Surrealism lies at the heart of the photographic enterprise: in the very creation of a duplicate world, of a reality in the second degree, narrower but more dramatic than the one perceived by natural vision.” No matter how accurate the metaphor about the surrealism of photography is, we cannot show all the books of the Library within the framework of this Book’s Day, so we decided to show surrealism as a phenomenon in photography.

“I believe in the future resolution of these two states, dream and reality, which are seemingly so contradictory, into a kind of absolute reality, a surreality, if one may so speak.”
From the “Manifesto of Surrealism”, 1924
