Why do airplane routes curve instead of straight?

The choice that airplane flights do not follow straight lines but rather curved paths goes beyond any technical issues - it is an adaptation to the curvature of the Earth itself. In geometry, we know that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, but this principle only applies to flat surfaces, such as a piece of paper. When the spherical shape of the Earth is taken into account, the shortest distance between two points becomes a curve, called a geodesic.

This concept originates from Riemannian geometry, which is more suitable for curved surfaces. Flight planners use this method to plan the shortest routes to save time and fuel. These geodesic paths represent the most efficient routes on a sphere. Instead of flying in a "straight line" as on a flat map, airplanes fly along curved trajectories, which in three-dimensional reality are the shortest paths.

These routes are a fascinating demonstration of the curvature of the Earth. Each flight follows a route that seems counterintuitive, but in fact, represents the shortest distance and the least effort on our spherical planet.
