When Janet Caperna joined The Valley, she thought the biggest drama would be on-screen.
At first, her DMs were lighthearted – fans reacting to scenes, asking about her outfits, sharing favourite moments. But the tone shifted. And then it snowballed.
“You don’t deserve to live.”
“We know where your kid goes to school.”
“Rot in hell.”
The threats escalated until they began targeting her toddler son.
Strangers claimed to know her address. Fake “news” stories appeared online to stir hate.It wasn’t just digital harassment anymore, it felt like her family’s safety was at real risk.
Janet made the hardest decision of her life: she left the U.S., locked her accounts, and stepped away from public life entirely.
Her story shows how quickly the line between online and offline can blur and how abuse can push someone out of the spotlight they once embraced.
That’s why Freedom2hear exists: to raise awareness, share survivor stories, and push for safer online spaces where people don’t have to choose between their passion and their safety.

Instagram just rolled out a new feature letting you share your “last active location” with friends through the in-app map. It’s meant to make meet-ups easier and keep people connected.
But for many, it’s raising alarms:
👉 Reports of location showing up without users switching it on
👉 Concerns about stalking or harassment, especially for teens and vulnerable users
👉 Parents automatically alerted if their teen enables it - removing privacy for young users
👉 Experts warning it could become another tool for targeting people offline
Instagram says it’s optional, not used for ads, and only visible to people you choose but safety groups recommend you check your settings now.
🔒 How to turn it off completely:
-> Go to your Instagram profile and tap the menu (☰) in the top right.
-> Select Settings and Privacy.
-> Tap Location Sharing.
-> Switch Location Access to “Never” (or “Only While Using the App” if you want partial control).
-> On your phone, go to Device Settings → Privacy → Location Services and disable Instagram’s access entirely.
Once location data is out there, you can’t take it back.

Graeme Shields, president of Queen’s Park FC - one of Scotland’s oldest and most historic football clubs - he gave his time, energy, and passion to the game.
But behind the scenes, the online abuse kept coming.
👉 Personal attacks
👉 Social media pile-ons
👉 Relentless hostility
It wasn’t just about the club’s struggles - the financial pressures, the loss of their benefactor in 2026, or unpopular decisions like closing the academy.
It was personal. And it was constant.Eventually, the abuse became too much.
Graeme stepped down, citing the “increased level of personal and online abuse” as his reason.
This is the reality for many in public roles - whether you’re a player, a coach, or a club leader. The love of the game should unite people. But too often, it’s drowned out by hate.

Online toxicity doesn’t usually appear out of nowhere… it builds up. Sometimes quietly. Sometimes aggressively. But always with warning signs.
At Freedom2hear, we’ve developed a trend detection system powered by emotion-based AI. It doesn’t just flag abusive words - it recognises patterns of harmful behaviour over time.
✅ Tracks repeated offences
✅ Identifies sudden spikes in toxic activity
✅ Highlights suspicious behaviour before it escalates
Whether it’s hate raids, targeted harassment, or subtle manipulation, our tools help you step in early not after it’s too late.
It’s not just about filtering comments. It’s about understanding why they happen and stopping the cycle before it spirals.

In the past week, the global football and social media communities were confronted by a deeply disturbing act: a 16-year-old footballer, Skye Stout, was subjected to cruel online abuse simply because of her appearance and skin condition enough to force Kilmarnock Football Club Women to remove their social media announcement of her signing.
But here’s where the story turns hopeful: in her senior debut, Skye struck back , not with words, but with a stunning free-kick goal and a key assist, helping her team to a 6–2 victory. Her performance silenced the trolls and earned admiration from across the sport, including tributes from Jamie Carragher, John Hartson, Ally McCoist, and even former First Minister Humza Yousaf.
What stands out to me is not just her technical ability, but her courage and grace under pressure. In the face of malice and negativity, Skye chose strength on and off the field.
Lessons we can all take from this:
- Support matters. When deserving voices are unfairly attacked, we must rally behind them.
- Talent and resilience can’t be silenced. They shine brightest under scrutiny.
- Public platforms carry responsibility. We must choose encouragement over cruelty, especially toward those just starting their journeys.
👏 So here’s to Skye Stout - may this be just the first of many moments where her skills, determination, and spirit make the world stand up and applaud.
At we’re reminded daily of the power of amplifying voices that deserve to be heard- and Skye’s is one of them.

🛡️ Online Safety vs. Freedom of Speech: Finding the balance
The UK’s Online Safety Act is a big step toward making the internet safer - tackling illegal content, protecting children, and addressing harmful online behaviour.
But as platforms take on greater responsibility for moderating content, important questions naturally arise:
• Who decides what crosses the line?
• Could meaningful debate sometimes get caught in the net?
• How do we ensure people are protected and voices are heard?
What’s clear is that protecting the vulnerable must come first but it’s also vital we continue to refine the balance between safety and open conversation.
As the digital world evolves, so too must our approach. The conversation isn’t about whether we need safety online, it’s about how we achieve it responsibly.
💬 What do you think: does the Act strike the right balance today, or is there more work to be done?
