In times of uncertainty, the weight of leadership can feel exponential. When a crisis hits, your emotional system is often the first to be "ambushed," triggering a Fear Loop of doubt and information overload that can throw even the most seasoned leader off balance.
But at its core, fear is not a weakness, it is the fuel to your courage.
As Tony Blauer famously noted, “The mind navigates the body”. Every action is completed in your mind before it is actioned by the body. To lead your team through the fog, you must first win the internal game by training your brain to shift gears.
The 3D Framework for Regaining Balance:
• Detect: Recognize when your psychology has been ambushed. This awareness gives you the data needed to stop and breathe.
• Defuse: De-escalate yourself by creating a moment to recalibrate. Ask: “How is what I think or feel supported by the facts I know?” This disrupts the Fear Loop and creates stable ground.
• Defend: Once the internal game is won, take action. Movement stimulates positive feelings and leads to better, more decisive leadership.
Accepting that courage is built upon fear makes your response not only natural but necessary. By managing yourself first, you gain the clarity to guide others toward a path of resilience.
