A Mechanical Engineering fresh graduate has developed a GPS-based Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) prototype aimed at improving the commuting experience of passengers using LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

In a social media post that gained attention, engineering graduate Clyde Corpuz showcased a handheld prototype device designed to provide real-time train information for major railway lines in Metro Manila.

The device uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to track a train’s location and determine its current station, as well as its departure, approach, and arrival times.

It also displays additional details such as the date, time, and which train doors will open at each station, helping passengers avoid missing their stop.

“I recently made a handheld prototype device for a GPS-based passenger information display system (PIDS) for use in LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3. It detects the location, departure, approach, and arrival of the currently boarded train. It also provides useful information, such as the current station, next station, which doors will open, transfers to other lines, and train direction,” said in the post..

In an exclusive interview with Balita, Clyde explained how the prototype functions.

“So, the way my prototype works, it gets the current location using the GPS, and it measures the distance to the stations.

“It also calculates ‘yong speed to determine kung umaandar na ba ‘yong tren or if naka-stop. Using these, ina-update niya ‘yong screen para mapakita ‘yong appropriate information. Aside from that, may other information din as well like ‘yong time and date, which side the doors will open per station, and may warning din siya if nasa last [station] ka na,” he added.

Clyde shared that his goal is to make it easier for commuters to know their location during a trip. He pointed out that, unlike in other countries, passengers in the Philippines often have to read the entire route map just to figure out which station they are currently in.

Sobrang laking tulong talaga kapag may ganitong system, ‘yong passenger information,” Clyde said.

Isa pa ‘yong stress dahil sobrang siksikan,” he added.

Through his PIDS prototype, Clyde believes the system can reduce the mental burden on commuters and make daily travel more convenient.

He also noted that the device could be especially helpful for persons with disabilities (PWDs), particularly members of the deaf community who are unable to hear train announcements.

Clyde shared that many social media users asked why he did not simply turn the prototype into a mobile application, since most passengers already have smartphones.

He explained that the main objective of the project is to integrate the system into large display screens inside trains and manage announcements, especially for older train units that lack automated systems.

“So, this is especially good sa mga lumang tren na walang automated announcements. I could also see potential in this kind of system [and] ‘yong ibang transit modes like buses na may designated stops, maybe sa EDSA Carousel, Cebu BRT [Bus Rapid Transit], to name a few,” he said.

When asked about the story behind the development of the prototype, Clyde said he had the idea for a long time but only decided to pursue it last month after being inspired by a PIDS concept art shared by another netizen.

“Later on, siguro around last month lang, may nag-post ng concept art for their own design of passenger information display system. We don't know each other personally. Siguro we only had some contact when I told him na ginagawa ko 'yong project ko. But I did credit him for the inspiration. That was just November 26, and nung pa lang siya talaga ini-start and I finished December 19,” he added.

Asked if he sees himself working with the government in the future, Clyde shared that as a Mechanical Engineering fresh graduate currently preparing for the board exams, his true aim is to serve the public using his skills and knowledge.

“Currently, I'm working on boards. Pero kasi even before, back in high school and college, I already wanted to help out, to lend a hand. I want to contribute my skills and knowledge, to help improve our mass transit here in the Philippines,” Clyde added.

“Kasi, not just in the big things like ‘yong infrastructure. I can also do that. I'm a mechanical engineering graduate. But also, the small things like this, yung signages, ‘yong passenger information systems. It could also help bring new riders and increase ridership,” he explained.

Clyde also believes that improving train systems is one of the key ways to address the country’s worsening traffic situation.

I really want more people to ride public transport because I really believe that it is the solution to our country's worsening traffic. We need more of it. We need them to be accessible to all,” he said.

He added that while the PIDS prototype is currently a personal project, he remains open to working with agencies if given the opportunity.

“It's just my project for now, pero if the agencies would like to tap me on doing work for them, as a worker, you would expect to be compensated for your hard work and your knowledge and all of that. I just really, really want to help all of the commuters and to help improve our transit system here,” Clyde added.
