You can't mandate your culture.
Businesses must do more than stick corporate values on the walls of their office- live your values, live your culture!
Spending time developing your internal culture so as to create a positive and motivating environment is so important.
Not only is it a key tenet of employee engagement, loyalty, and retention, it also attracts customers and allows a higher quality service or product.

Your culture is your brand.
Customers care about your culture. We’ve recently witnessed many brands in the public space which were outed as having a massive misalignment between their external brand and their culture. With the rise of online media, it is easier than ever to learn about brands from employees, customer experiences, and relationships with suppliers or partners.
A brand can no longer be committed to sustainability in marketing campaigns without facing scrutiny regarding the authenticity of such a claim.
However, aligning brand and culture is more than catering to the rise of public scrutiny. Ultimately, your culture determines whether you deliver on your brand promise. The gap many businesses create between human resources and marketing creates a divide between how you want to be perceived and how you are perceived by customers.

"It takes more than personal integrity to build a trusting, trustworthy organization. It takes skills, smart supporting processes, and unwavering attention on the part of top managers."
()
This is a great article, but it doesn’t stress sufficiently the ease with which trust can be destroyed and the incredible damage that this loss of trust creates.
As a military man, David relied on colleagues’ trust to literally keep me alive, and they felt the same about David. What was the key to building this success? It was about showing colleagues that what they said mattered, that their views meant a great deal to me, and that David actually listened.
By involving our people in the process design, we are demonstrating all these
qualities. As long as we do it authentically, then we will build trust. You can't
just play at it, just act the part, and then ignore your people’s ideas- this will backfire and the trust will be gone entirely and will be even more challenging to build again.

With the Holy Month of Ramadan quickly approaching, we wanted to share this article which highlights the basics of the Holy Month.
https://buff.ly/2OEHlxd
As this article suggests, this time of year is identified by shorter working hours, removal of food and drink, and basic overt signs of difference. For many non-Muslims, this is a time where the differences are exposed even more. However, during our time in the region, we've have found this to be a great time for workers in a diverse workforce to bridge the expatriate/host nation divide. We can significantly enhance knowledge transfer, and create an environment where Tacit knowledge exchange is far easier to achieve.
This can also be a month of reflection for non-Muslims, and a chance to learn of the significance of Ramadan. Not only does this provide a great opportunity to build relationships, it is also incredibly interesting learning about new concepts, thoughts and meanings.

What have we actually learned from the pandemic?
A very interesting article that highlights our human adaptability, Here, the article suggests that organisational culture is adjusting to suit external conditions, namely the pandemic.
However, human behaviour acts across three levels, the universal, collective and individual levels. The base level, the universal level, is what we all do such as eating, breathing, loving, and facing threats!
When facing a threat, we all act the same, we all work together, team-building increases and we group as a species and adapt to changes such as the use of Zoom, Teams etc. However, once the threat has gone, we resume normal behaviour and that moves us into the middle level, the collective or cultural area where we once again behave as per our learning. That learning takes time to build and, consequently, it doesn’t change quickly.
The learnt behaviour is what has evolved and what works. The evolution post Covid will be interesting as it will provide a testing ground for whether behaviour will evolve as learned or whether it was purely a universal threat reaction!

Did you know that Expats account for around 48.1% of total population in GCC countries?
Even with the recent dip following the pandemic, many GCC countries are reliant on expat populations. Plus, more than 46% of Expats in the Middle East think they are earning a lot more than they would back home!
With so many cultures in one place it is vital to understand the other cultures around you as they do not think like you, and they may not share the same values.
What kind of problems can arise?
Cultural misunderstanding can lead to miscommunication, mismanagement and disaster. This will likely sink your team success and productivity.

Are you a slave to your IT system?
Often, I find that businesses rush to invest in shiny new technology which does not actually serve their business needs. To compensate for this investment, businesses then align their business with the rules of the IT System rather than having a system which actually streamlines your business needs.
Processes are enabled by IT- not the other way around. Make calculated investments by understanding your processes.

What are the points of intersection between people and processes?
'In core functional or process transformation initiatives — which are often driven by digitization — we’ve seen examples of people analytics being used to measure activities and find embedded expertise.'
This article provides an interesting example in how using people analytics helps support process initiatives in organisations.
A key takeaway which transcends categories? Having data is great- but actually knowing how to USE data to make better decisions is paramount to successful transformation.
