A new report by the 100 Million Farmers initiative, Breakthrough Models for Financing a Sustainable Transition, outlines how to support and work alongside farmers, with a specific focus on speeding up the adoption of regenerative agriculture pathways. The model suggests de-risking transitions by aggregating capital from public and private sources to overcome initial financing costs, thus contributing to the key question of how we unlock resilience across the complexities of the food systems.
We asked three farming leaders to share their thoughts on their greatest worries and most hopeful solutions.

Is the Future of Farming Soilless?
The global population is predicted to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. To feed everyone, it is estimated that global food production will need to increase by up to 70 percent in the next 30 years.
Meanwhile, rapid urbanization is reducing the availability of agricultural land, and climate change is expected to make the land thatโs left less suitable for staple crops like wheat, rice, corn and oats.
Whatโs more, food systems produce around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions from human activities and account for 70 percent of the worldโs freshwater withdrawals. Traditional agriculture also contributes to deforestation, soil erosion and over-reliance on pesticides around the world.
So, how do we help feed more people?

This paper presents new estimates of the effects of dry episodes (rainfall shocks) and droughts on gross domestic product (GDP) per capita growth rates using state-of-theart empirical methods. Rainfall and water availability exhibit considerable spatial variability that is almost two times greater than that of temperature. Hence, the analysis needs to be conducted at a high degree of spatial disaggregation to capture the effects of rainfall variations on economic indicators of interest.

How the resilience of global food systems is critical for climate action.
โช๏ธGlobal water and food systems impact peopleโs lives and livelihoods, and are a high-emitting sector for carbon emissions, making them a priority in multilateral dialogue.
โช๏ธLocal contexts vary and agricultural methods must adapt accordingly, so farmers must be at the forefront and centre of change initiatives.
โช๏ธTechnology and innovation will drive climate adaptation and food systems resiliency; several initiatives have emerged to catalyze the right investment, ecosystem and market conditions for suitable solutions.

Financing Climate-adaptive, Water-resilient Food Systems.
โก๏ธ A white paper from the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the NDC Partnership shows options on how mitigation and adaptation ambition can be raised and access to finance for implementation can be realized.
โก๏ธ The key actions are benefit-sharing, building for bankability, investment bundling, and blending.
โก๏ธ The investment pathways include providing transition finance for regenerative and water-efficient agriculture, landscape-based finance, patient finance for multi-use water infrastructure capital, and natural capital finance.

Olive oil price skyrockets as Spanish drought bites.
Francisco Josรฉ Garcรญa de Zรบรฑiga is looking across one of the fields of olive trees that he farms. It's harvest time, and the hum of the machine used to shake the trees as workers beat the olives off their branches can be heard in the distance.
"This is turning out to be another bad year, to put it mildly," he said. "We've had two years of drought in a row, 2022 and 2023, and two years of bad harvests."
Mr Garcรญa de Zรบรฑiga's land is in Jaรฉn, the southern inland province that is the heart of Spanish olive oil output.
Spain is the world's biggest olive oil producer, covering 70% of European Union consumption and 45% of that of the entire world.
The lack of rain that this province and other olive-producing areas around Spain have been seeing therefore has an enormous impact on both the amount of oil being produced and its price.

The climate changed world โ with dwindling water supply and inadequate water services โ is also changing children, altering their mental and physical health, new report warns.
NEW YORK, 13 November 2023 โ 1 in 3 children โ or 739 million worldwide โ already live in areas exposed to high or very high water scarcity, with climate change threatening to make this worse, according to a new UNICEF report.
Further, the double burden of dwindling water availability and inadequate drinking water and sanitation services is compounding the challenge, putting children at even greater risk.
The Climate Changed Child โ released ahead of the COP28 climate change summit - throws a spotlight on the threat to children as a result of water vulnerability, one of the ways in which the impacts of climate change are being felt. It provides an analysis of the impacts of three tiers of water security globally โ water scarcity, water vulnerability, and water stress*.

Agriculture is confronting a host of difficulties resulting from shifting climate conditions, including frequent extreme weather events, unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and the increasing prevalence of destructive storms, making it the most vulnerable sector to climate change. Climate-smart agriculture is the solution, promoting green and climate-resilient practices.
This article delves into the intricate relationship between climate change, agriculture, and food security. It sheds light on the significance of adopting climate-smart agricultural practices while emphasizing the pivotal role of Earth observation and geospatial technologies in this pursuit. It also addresses the challenges associated with integrating these technologies and the need for education, data security, and ensuring accessibility to all.
