In 2015, NASA awarded $850,000 for the NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge to submissions answering the question: How do we recycle on the moon.
Six waste streams were identified to represent the most frequently discarded items astronauts encounter while in space:
Fabrics
Food packaging
Structural elements for temporary structures
Foam packaging
Extravehicular Activities (EVA) waste
Other packaging and gloves
في عام ٢٠١٥، منحت وكالة ناسا ٨٥٠ ألف دولار أمريكي لتحدي إعادة تدوير القمر (LunaRecycle Challenge) للمشاركات التي تجيب على السؤال التالي: كيف نعيد التدوير على سطح القمر؟
تم تحديد ستة أنواع من النفايات تمثل أكثر المواد التي يتخلص منها رواد الفضاء أثناء وجودهم في الفضاء:
