Young Women demand action on missing US$15bn

Young Women in Marange say the government should take corrective steps thoroughly to deal with the missing US$15 billion and bring to book all companies that have refused to honour their pledges to the Zimunya-Marange Community Share Ownership Scheme.

The young women said they want to benefit from the remaining resource and proper consultation should be done with the community before full scale mining resumes.

They’re demanding justice to be effected on companies and individuals linked to the disappearance of the $15 billion from the diamond industry and are demanding the President to flex his muscles and arrest those companies and individuals who presented a dummy $1.5 million cheque which has never been honoured towards the community share ownership scheme.

During the public hearing conducted by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment at Bambazonke, Marange villagers who took part during the meeting came out guns blazing demanding their share.

They told the portfolio committee that since the discovery of the diamonds the resource has brought more problems leaving the community much poorer than before.

"Culprits who presented to the President Mugabe a dummy cheque during the launch of the community trust should be arrested," said one villager.

Besides lack of development in Manicaland, villagers say their livestock are dying due to heavy pollution of river sources.

The chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee Cde Justice Mayor Wadyajena told the villagers that the purpose of their team was to gather evidence and later present a comprehensive report to parliament.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment was in Manicaland over the weekend to see the corporate social responsibility programmes that were rolled out by diamond mining companies.

Young Women’s Forum for Good Governance wishes the people of Zimbabwe a Happy 36th Independence anniversary.

Zimbabwe has made notable progress in the area of women empowerment and gender equality, including the enactment of the new constitution with clear provisions promoting gender equality.

The government will need to move from mere talk to purposeful action, to ensure that there is gender equality and equity in all our institutions.

Even though the day remains relevant and important to the history of the country, youth unemployment remains a key challenge. State institutions have been personalised, captured and pillaged with impunity.

As we celebrate our independence day the government needs to mobilize resources, including from the private sector for young women’s development.

Mobilising young women to become active citizens with the ability to analyse power relations and claim their rights in the governance of their respective communities is fundamental.

Zimbabwe has made significant progress in ratifying international gender protocols in various sectors of the economy. The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Zimbabwe call for applications

FES Youth Leadership, a German non-profit, public-interest institution for civic and political education, is offering leadership training for young adults. The training will target young leaders with proven political and socio-economic interests and abilities.

FES will meet the cost of the actual training for the selected participants while any other associated costs will have to be borne by the participant.

Interested candidates should fulfil the following criteria:

3.Proven political, social and ecological interests

Did you know that the Zimbabwe government will pay full school and boarding fees for all students in public schools who register for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects this year at advanced level , higher education minister Jonathan Moyo announced recently.

Women call for inclusion in local budgeting processes

A small group of young women gathered at Bazeley Bridge, Mutare over the last weekend for a focus group discussion on local budgeting processes and resource allocation.

The focus group discussion, was aimed at raising awareness on the importance of resource allocation and budgeting at the local level.

The discussion was organised by the Young Women Forum for Good Governance.

Register your marriage! It is always better that way…

There is need to end child marriages:

All laws affecting children must be aligned to the Constitution and their implementation ensured. This includes the laws which provide for the issue of the age of consent. Increase initiatives to address the cultural, social, religious and economic factors that drive the practice. Empower the girl child to stand up for her rights and report cases of such marriages. Ensure that all citizens are aware of this progressive development and also understand the import of the judgment. Explore innovative strategies for full implementation of the policy on Second Chance Education to make it work for young school dropouts, especially girls.

Child marriages: No more!!

It is commendable that the Constitutional Court has finally outlawed child marriage and struck down section 22(1) of the Marriage Act, which for years had allowed children under the age of 18 years to marry. The landmark ruling should be seen as a major victory in the fight against child brides and poverty. A UNICEF report (2015) estimated that 31% of girls in Zimbabwe are married before their 18th birthday, putting the country among four Southern African countries with the highest rates of girl child marriages. Prior to the judgment, laws pertaining to marriage in Zimbabwe discriminated against girls: the Marriage Act allowed girls to marry at the age of 16 while the minimum age for boys was 18.
