Mid-Week Watch

Hello Zimbabwe!

This is definitely one of my most treasured pictures.
I was at my personal work desk in the huge Radio 2 office at the ZBC Mbare studios some years back.

This is the office that I shared with some of the country’s crème de la crème of radio broadcasters I found there when I joined as a teenager, the likes of Brenda Moyo, Praxcedes Jeremiah, Joe Panganayi, Ishmael Simiso Mzilethi, Itai Godfrey Muchada and others.

I chose the corner desk as you can see, I was very shy, nervous, timid and afraid of these big names I had to face daily.

Honestly speaking I hated my job at that time, I didn’t feel ready and confident I would match the standards of these top guys I only knew from listening to Radio while I was a school boy.

I didn’t want it. I wanted to be out there playing money game football with the boys kumaraini!
But my mum was not having it.. ‘Hamba emsebenzini ungenzi into zokudlala , ufunukutshona uthuza ibhora kuphela’, she would say, even if I was off!

I don’t know who took that picture and I have never seen it before!
Here I was with a ZBC Research Librarian Nicholas Tavengwa.

I had requested him to find me some piece of information I needed as I prepared for one of my hot radio shows and I was delighted he did find what I wanted and brought it while I was typing my playlist.
We used to call the guy ‘Professor’.

These are the days and moments I surely will never forget..the birth of Eric Knight the broadcaster.

I remember within months that whole corner was filled with newspaper and magazine stories about Eric Knight that I cut and pinned on the wall.
It provided a lot of entertainment as visitors to ZBC Mbare offices would read about me from the Eric Knight corner 🤣🤣.

Many times I would report for duty, only to find people literally gathered at the wall behind my desk enjoying reading, sometimes even dozens of school children on school tours at the ZBC.

Sometimes just waiting to see me in person, and that would really put me off as I was comfortable away from crowds, too shy to meet the public.
