The Reverend Ken Anderson passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday, 9 February, surrounded by his familyโhis wife Polly and children Rachel and Jamie.
Ken was appointed Chaplain of Peterhouse by Bruce Fieldsend in September 1983. When Springvale House opened in 1985, he also took on its chaplaincy and led the Dedication Service, attended by Canon Robert GrinhamโKenโs godfather and co-founder of Ruzawi and Springvale Schools. Later, Ken assumed responsibility for Ruzawi School as well. Serving three schools was no easy task, yet he managed it with unwavering dedication, always prioritizing the needs of the pupils.
Ken and his twin brother, Mikey, were born in 1938 at the Lady Chancellor Nursing Home in what was then Salisbury. Their childhood home was Ruzawi, and they attended Godfrey Huggins School. When their father left to serve in the war, their mother joined the police force. At the warโs end, the family reunited with their father in Florence, Italy, where Ken and Mikey spent part of their early years.
Ken had long dreamed of returning to Zimbabwe, and when the opportunity arose, he and Polly moved back, leaving Rachel and Jamie to complete their schooling in England.
A year after their arrival, Polly played a key role in the founding of Springvale House, becoming the much-loved school secretary until the family returned to the UK. Meanwhile, Ken became well-known among the farming community, forging strong relationships with Peterhouse, Springvale House, and Ruzawi families. Eventually, he left Peterhouse to take up the Rectorship of the Anglican Church in Marondera, where he became a highly respected figure. He dedicated evenings to travelling across the districts, leading Bible studies and services, and deepening his impact in the local Marondera community.
Ken also coordinated the Schools Partnership Worldwide programme in the Marondera area, bringing young British gap-year students to teach in rural schools. This initiative enriched both the visiting students and the local schoolchildren and teachers.
In March 1994, Ken and Polly returned to England, where Ken became Chaplain of Trevelyan and Van Mildert Colleges at Durham University. Once again, he was beloved by students, offering them guidance and support. In retirement, the couple settled in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, near Rachel. Even then, Ken continued his ministry and counselling as a local Parish Priest.
Ken was an intelligent and compassionate man who dedicated his life to service, always supported by Polly, his steadfast partner.
To Polly, Rachel, Jamie, and their families, we extend our deepest condolences.
May Ken rest in peace
