One of the best places we will visit in Kariba is the St Barbara Church.
The St. Barbara Church is an Italian-built Catholic church which was built in the memory of 86 African and Italian construction workers who lost their lives during the construction of Kariba dam. The church is located on top of the hill at Kariba Heights and is dedicated to St Barbara, who is the patron saint of engineers and construction workers.
On the outside walls of the church is a dedication in Latin to the memory of the construction workers who lost their lives during the construction of the dam. On the inside is a marble memorial with their names. The church has beautiful stained glass windows and an open-air design which is perfectly suited to the hot climate of Kariba. A bell tower at the back of the church still contains the original bell constructed by hand by Italian workers at the time and was raised to place with a crane.

15 more days to go, with so much anxiety. Today let's get to a few facts about the Kariba Dam Wall.
The construction of the dam began on the 6th of November 1956 and was completed in 1959 by Impressit of Italy. It is 128m high and 579m wide.
During the construction 86 men lost their lives.

Electricity is produced through hydro-electric turbines on both sides of the walls and supplies to Zimbabwe and Zambia.

As we make the countdown to the exciting Kariba tour, here are some few things that you might want to know about Chinhoyi Caves formerly Sinoia. Frederick Selous is believed to be the first white to have discovered the caves.
The cave is also known as Chirorodziwa, which means the "Pool of the Fallen".

The Caves were used as a stronghold by a bandit called Nyamakwere who murdered his victims by throwing them into the Silent Pool. Nyamakwere was eventually defeated and killed by a Headman called Chinhoyi who became a Mashona Chief, hence the name Chinhoyi given to the nearby town.
