please take a listen to this Zimbabwean jazz sensation
Jazz Performed Like Never Before

We are thrilled by the prospects of what this occasion is poised to offer. In his own right and accompanying other artists of note, Othnell Mangoma Moyo popularly and simply known as Mangoma has been in the music mix for a long time. Mangoma is an exceptional percussionist. The passion, precision and percussive abilities are a wonder to watch.

Now imagine this ......this amazing artist is bringing his own ensemble called MAP an acronym for Music According to Percussion which has been in existence for quite a while now! Aside for it to be quite an unusual name for a group, it also raises the curiousity and spectre of how that music can also be jazz to make it jazz according to percussion.

We of The Zimbabwe Jazz Community Trust are proud to present this ensemble for your listening and dancing pleasure. We are excited beyond belief to showcase this phenomenal group of talented artists to our Jazzics platform.

The Zimbabwe Jazz Festival 2020, Jazz on a Higher Level.

By R.I.C. Basvi

The ZJCT Zimbabwe Jazz Festival for this year 2020 was brought into our homes by the generous Sponsorship of the French Embassy, the Alliance Francaise Harare and the Alliance Francaise Bulawayo. The French Embassy and the Alliance Francaise have become household names in bringing the Jazz festival and this time even the COVID-19 pandemic could not stop them as they together with the curators, the Zimbabwe Jazz Community Trust opted for the Virtual Zimbabwe Jazz Festival. Running under the theme Jazz on a Higher level, the festival lived up to its billing. Those who have not yet watched this rare feast streamed on the 31st of October 2020, will certainly enjoy the true innovation of Jazz exhibited by all the fine musicians billed for the yearly festival as they spiritfully gave their own interpretation of Jazz. It was a riveting 4 hour journey into the world of these Jazz Connoisseurs as briefly described here:

Filbert Marova

Opening the Jazz Festival with his mbira on keyboard jazz he dubbed Mbiriano, Filbert Marova set the stage alight for the jazz on a higher level. The show was indeed a true Zimbabwean affair with artists drawn from different corners of Zimbabwe and the jazz itself being a true Zimbabwean interpretation. The genius on the keyboard aptly interpreted the Zimbabwean traditional mbira into magical jazz on the keys with his son Tafadzwa complimenting him on the bass. The veteran Sam Mataure's drums guided the father and son in their tracks. His pick of friends in Nonhlahla and Kelvin was a befitting definition to the Mbiriano. Kelvin opened the vocals with the beautiful traditional piece Nhemamusasa and at the end the duo of Nonhlahla and Kelvin also belted the Filbert Marova classic Bp in the Mbiriano style.

Dudu

The evergreen lady of Jazz, Dudu gave us her soulful Jazz which was not only strong on vocals but the drums and bass too. The drums in the capable hands of the hubby Mr Blessing Mparutsa (her guy as she affectionately called him on stage) made the Twist dance to the self titled song Dudu instinctive. The song Existence with its laid back feel brought nostalgic sensations to the initiated. Dudu has managed to mould a gospel jazz comfort zone of her own that has kept an amazing depth of jazz. Tina's bass was like a sweet sound breathing upon a bank of violets, stealing hearts and making them beat faster. Dudu has this magnetic touch that takes you along and when she invites you to participate you oblige willingly under her magical spell. Her s**t is "telepathically" electrifying leaving you humming/s**tting along. Like she said "all the Jazz lovers out there keep on jazzing."

Bradley Sibiya Quintet

Perhaps the appropriate description of Bradley Sibiya would be "the gentleman with no breath" as he left us mesmerized by his inspirational Sax romance. And the rest of the Quintet too showed a deep connection and understanding of every one of the pieces they churned. Thulani's guitar, like Bradley's sax, was like an irresistible temptress. These young jazz gurus showed depth and exuded the richness of Zimbabwe's jazz.

The Travellers

The Travellers took zimbabwean traditional sound and put it through a fine brew of jazz. With the Mapaso twins not only twinning on the vocals but also teaming up one on the Sax and the other on the guitar, the six strong band kept their audience spellpound. The traditional colorful ngoma added a delicious staccato flavour with enjoyable accompanying dances from the three frontliners.

Rute Mbangwa

The bubbly Rute Mbangwa brought us her faultless voice underpinned by Trust's guitar wizardry which aptly tracked the Diva's sweet compositions. Thulani on the sax was a befitting accompaniment to Rute's wooing velvety vocals. Rute's signalling to Trust to "take it away" would inspire richly innovative solos from the guitar maestro Trust Samende.

Steve Chikoti

Hailing from the Eastern Highlands Steve Chikoti was a marvel to watch and listen to.
He presented superb blues with his hard hitting lyrics enhanced by his compelling vocals. Brian Nhanhanga's lead defined the blues mood making all jazz lovers spellbound. Steve's lyrics are that rare feast intelligently crafted to woo any admirer of good art. With the songs' subjects ranging from child abuse to love, it was an exciting and thought provoking social commentary. Steve also inevitably delved into the township jazz with equally amusing lyrics.

Buhle

Hailing from Bulawayo with the band Fusion the versatile Buhle opened her set with a gospel jazz piece. Like we have come to appreciate from Buhle her pulsating vocals were accompanied by her unfailing and engrossing dances decorated with illustrative gestures. The songstress has a way with her voice as she can take you from a rich low and build it up to a climaxing crescendo all in a dazzling jazzy feat.

Prudence Katomeni Mbofana

Prudence stamped her authority as Zimbabwe's Jazz Diva from way back by opening her set with a beautiful s**t to her great song Dzidza which is a piece of advice to the youths. "Parents work for and always have a wish for their children to be successful in all they do, their hearts and hope are in their children." The song Stronger was introduced with Prudence on Mbira, true to the Zimbabwe jazz interpretation that was in the air of the festival. Prudy wooed us with her polished and familiar songs backed by a youthful band and this was undoubtedly consistent with the ZJCT's drive to keep jazz alive in Zimbabwe. What better way to do so than invest the valuable jazz in the youth.

Ngoma Ingoma

A seven member band closed the festival with their own style of jazz, rich with shakers and congas. They kept their audiences on their feet with their danceable pieces.

This 2020 Zimbabwe Jazz Festival, though Virtual is certainly a feast we are going to enjoy for a very long time. In shona we have a saying that goes "Kushata kwechimwe kunaka kwechimwe" and this translated can mean "every cloud has a silver lining". While the pandemic dealt us serious blows including confining everyone indoors and hence the inability to hold the festival live on a physical stage, the virtual jazz festival will ensure every lover of Zimbabwe Jazz will have an opportunity to watch this top drawer performance from every corner of the world at their convenient time. The Zimbabwe Jazz Festival 2020 can be watched on Facebook at the The Zimbabwe Jazz Community Trust page, on the Alliance Francaise de Harare page or on the Yakontent page. Keep on Jazzing!
