Do you know the basics of engine oil ?

As a driver, are you aware of what kind of oil is needed for your vehicle, how often to add it and how much is needed? This is meant to take you through the basics of engine oil so that you take care of your precious vehicles.

The first question you are probably asking yourself is, what role does oil play, to what extent is it important? Yes, it is a supporting component but very important in the combustion engine. Hear me out, your vehicle parts need to move freely and oil is there as a lubricant to allow that. The whole engine will grind to a halt if the engine oil is not added.The engine is the heart of a vehicle so that means all the other parts of the vehicle are affected. Oil also helps to prevent wear and tear, cools, clean and carry away contaminants which are a result of combustion and protects the engine.

What kind of oil is needed for your vehicle?
Oil can be mineral which is the oil produced during the oil refining process, or synthetic which are oils that go through chemical engineering (others super super refined and the others with a super base without mineral components). Synthetic oils have become more popular because of the advances in engine technology and because they do not have undesirable properties unlike mineral oils. They allow the driver to have more miles before oil change and have additives that help to keep the oil cleaner and for long. Right now you must be wondering what all these numbers mean, for example Castrol Edge “5W-40”. 5W means that the oil was tested for its resistance to flow (which is known as the viscosity of the oil) at a colder temperature by the SAE, and the 40 is the viscosity rating. So usually oils with two numbers such 5W-40 are considered to be multi-grade oils.

How often do you have to change your oil and how much is needed?
It has been common for drivers to change their oil after a certain mileage or 3 months per say but with these engine technology advances vehicles can now keep track of oil levels and alert the driver when there is a need.
