What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that’s mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. It involves applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues. This helps to break up scar tissue that forms following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and tissue.
It may also promote faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.

Cold Weather Care: 6 Winter Hair Tips For African Women

by Dr. John Frank | Healthy Sexy Hair

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, particularly when it comes to winter hair care. For black women, winter weather increases the risk of hair breakage, but you can keep those risks under control by:

1. Being Careful With Caps

Wool caps and scarves can pull on your hair, weakening the follicles and increasing the risk of breakage. Sizing is key to keeping this under control; tie your scarf loose and never wear a hat that is too small. Try wearing a silk or satin scarf instead of a wool one, and sew silk on the inside of a woolen cap. This will reduce the amount of stress on your hair.

2. Going Easy With Braid Extensions

Braid extensions protect your scalp from the cold winter air, but they also tug on your hair, leading to follicle damage and broken edges. To minimize this risk, take care not to braid your hair too tightly, especially along the hairline. Try not to wear taut buns or other styles that put tension on your hair and scalp. Finally, never wear hair extensions for more than a few months at a time; the longer you wear them, the less time your scalp has to recover from the tension.

3. Managing Moisture

The cool air can dry your hair out, depriving your scalp of moisture and nutrients. This leaves your hair vulnerable to edge breakage. To reverse this effect, use sealants made out of whipped butter and other heavy materials that will hold the moisture in place. Try to tuck the ends of your hair away when you go outside, as this will shield them from the cold air while also preventing them from rubbing against your clothing.

4. Supplementing Your Shampoo

Pre-shampoo treatments nourish your hair, making it less likely to lose nutrients and moisture in the shower or throughout the day. Most treatments are made of some combination of oils and conditioners. Rub these into your hair and then leave them in place for the specified amount of time; this can range from a few minutes to several hours depending on the treatment. In addition to pre-treatment, consider alternating between shampoo and conditioner when you bathe, as relying solely on shampoo is too harsh for most hair.

5. Holding Off On Heat

With indoor heating already depriving your hair of moisture, the last thing you want to do is further heat your hair with curling irons and blow dryers. Instead, focus on ponytails, loose buns, and other hair styles that don’t require you to heat your hair. You can also style your hair with wet sets and wraps.

5. Dealing With Damage

If you do develop broken edges or other hair damage, don’t hesitate to address the problem. There is a wide variety of ways to restore damaged hair, including hair transplants and scalp medications. The sooner you address the problem, the easier it will be to fix.
